Did USDA Lower New-Crop Corn Ending Stocks More Than Expected? What the October 2026 WASDE Has to Show

USDA's October 2026 WASDE was scheduled for October 9. Here is the September corn baseline and how to test whether new-crop ending stocks fell more than expected.

As of October 8, 2026, USDA had not yet published its October corn estimates, so no report exists yet that shows new-crop corn ending stocks falling more than expected. USDA scheduled the October World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) for October 9, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. Eastern. This article explains the baseline USDA set in September, the pressures pulling the 2026/27 balance sheet in different directions, and the specific checks that will tell you whether the headline holds once the report is out.

What the WASDE is and why October matters

The WASDE is the monthly balance-sheet estimate for major U.S. and world crops. USDA’s World Agricultural Outlook Board prepares and releases it, and the board chairs interagency commodity estimates committees that gather and interpret information from USDA and other domestic and foreign sources. For corn, the report sets out supply (beginning stocks plus production and imports), use (feed and residual, exports, ethanol and other uses), and the resulting ending stocks. Markets treat those ending stocks as the cleanest single measure of how much grain is left over, so a revision of even tens of millions of bushels draws attention.

October is the first WASDE after USDA’s late-September Grain Stocks report. That report resets the old-crop balance, and the carry-in it creates flows into the new-crop year. That is why the October release is where the market checks whether USDA has carried the old-crop change forward and whether it has also adjusted yield or demand.

The September baseline you need to compare against

Any statement about October ending stocks has to be measured against September’s published figures. The table below lists the baseline values and their sources.

U.S. corn ending stocks, new crop 1.567 billion bushels 2026/27 marketing year, September WASDE Iowa Farm Bureau, 2026
Change in new-crop ending stocks 86 million bushels lower Versus the prior USDA estimate, September WASDE Iowa Farm Bureau, 2026
U.S. corn yield projection 178.5 bushels per acre 2026/27, September WASDE Iowa Farm Bureau, 2026
Corn stocks on hand 2.095 billion bushels September 1, 2026, Grain Stocks report released September 30 University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture, 2026
Old-crop ending stocks estimate 1.922 billion bushels 2025/26 marketing year, September WASDE Pre-report preview cited in trade coverage, 2026

The September stocks figure was 35% above a year earlier and the highest reading in seven years, according to the University of Arkansas account. Pre-report trade expectations for that stocks number were near 1.924 billion bushels, so the released figure landed well above the old-crop balance USDA had shown.

How higher September stocks feed into the new crop

Ending stocks in one marketing year become beginning stocks in the next. The gap between 2.095 billion bushels on September 1 and the 1.922-billion-bushel old-crop estimate is about 173 million bushels. If nothing else changed, that is the amount by which 2026/27 beginning stocks would rise. This is an arithmetic illustration, not a USDA figure, and USDA can also change production, use, or trade estimates in the same month, so the net result may differ.

That is the core of the “more than expected” question. A larger carry-in pushes ending stocks up unless USDA offsets it. A reduction in new-crop ending stocks therefore requires either lower supply beyond the carry-in, higher use, or both.

The offsets the market was weighing

Yield

The September yield projection was 178.5 bushels per acre. Pro Farmer reported that a Reuters poll of analysts put the average October yield expectation at 177.8 bushels per acre, with individual estimates ranging from 173.2 to 182.1. That is a yield survey, not a survey of ending stocks, and it sits only about 0.7 bushel below USDA’s September number. The spread shows how wide the uncertainty was before the report.

Seed Needs Peaches and Cream Corn Seeds 230 Seeds 1.5 Ounce Bulk Pack
  • Hybrid Variety: Peaches & Cream Sweet Corn is a hybrid, sugary-enhanced (SE) bicolor variety known for its combination of yellow and white kernels, offering a dual flavor experience in each bite.
  • Early Maturity: This corn variety matures relatively early, with some sources indicating a harvest time around 80 to 90 days after planting, making it suitable for regions with shorter growing seasons.
  • Planting Tips: For optimal pollination and yield, plant in blocks rather than single rows, ensuring at least four rows for proper cross-pollination. Seeds should be planted when soil temperatures reach 60°F or above for good germination.
  • Flavor and Texture: Noted for its sweetness and tenderness, Peaches & Cream corn is praised for its fine texture and rich flavor, which can be enjoyed fresh, frozen, or cooked, making it versatile for various culinary uses.
  • Quality: All Sweet Corn seeds packaged by Seed Needs are intended for the current and the following growing seasons. All seeds are stored in a temperature controlled facility that is free of significant amounts of moisture.

University of Arkansas extension economist Scott Stiles framed the arithmetic this way: “Shaving 2 bushels off the U.S. yield would completely offset the 173-million-bushel increase in beginning stocks.” He also said, “The most likely way this could happen would be with lower production.” These were pre-report scenarios about what USDA would need to do. They were not a report of a reduction USDA had made.

Exports

Export commitments for the 2026/27 crop were 23% of USDA’s current forecast at the time of a Successful Farming Grain Market Insider preview, compared with a five-year average of 31% for that point in the marketing year. The preview judged that slower pace as a weak reason to raise the export forecast. It also noted that a larger carry-in could lift ending stocks unless USDA made a meaningful yield cut. That is analysis from a pre-report column, not a USDA export figure.

How to judge the headline once the October report is out

The phrase “lowers more than expected” has two parts that each need checking. Use this order when you read the coverage.

  1. Confirm the published figure. Find the 2026/27 U.S. corn ending-stocks number in USDA’s October WASDE. Make sure it is for new-crop, not 2025/26.
  2. Compare with September. Subtract the figure from the September projection of 1.567 billion bushels. A decline is the first condition for the headline.
  3. Find a like-for-like expectation. Use a dated, cited pre-report average of analysts’ ending-stocks estimates for the same marketing year. A yield poll, such as the 177.8-bushel Reuters average, does not qualify.
  4. Trace the bridge. Check how beginning stocks, production and yield, feed and residual use, exports, and ethanol and other use changed. If the decline came mainly from a yield cut, the result is a supply story; if it came from higher use, it is a demand story.
  5. Check the unit and label. Confirm the figures are in billion or million bushels as published and that the marketing-year label matches.

If USDA’s October figure is lower than September’s but not below a credible pre-report average, the accurate headline is “lower than September,” not “lower than expected.”

Why this matters beyond the futures pit

Corn ending stocks feed into price expectations for feed, ethanol, and exports, and those expectations shape what farmers earn from a crop and what food and livestock costs do over the coming year. Changes in one monthly report rarely translate directly into consumer prices, and the connection runs through many other factors. For household budgeting, the practical point is that a single WASDE number is one input among many, not a forecast you can plan around.

When you read the October coverage, treat the released USDA figure and a cited consensus as the two facts that matter. Anything beyond them is commentary.

What is not yet established

No published October ending-stocks figure exists in the sources available as of October 8, 2026. The 2.095-billion-bushel stocks number and the 173-million-bushel carry-in are established as pre-report facts. The claim that USDA lowered new-crop ending stocks more than expected remains unverified until the October report and a comparable trade estimate can be checked side by side.

Hmm

The Bottom Line

Hold the headline until you can check three numbers: USDA’s October 2026/27 ending-stocks figure, its comparison to September’s 1.567 billion bushels, and a dated, like-for-like analyst average for the same year. If all three line up, the “lower than expected” framing is supported. If any one is missing, report only the change from September.
