In February 2025, Trader Joe’s said customers could buy no more than one dozen eggs per day at any of its U.S. stores. Costco restrictions were also reported during the shortage, but the available reports do not establish a single nationwide in-store limit. These are historical reports, not confirmation of either retailer’s policy today.
What were Trader Joe’s and Costco’s egg limits?
| Retailer | Reported limit or notice | Where and when it applied |
|---|---|---|
| Trader Joe’s | One dozen eggs per customer per day | Trader Joe’s said on February 10, 2025, that the limit applied at all its U.S. stores. ABC News and the Associated Press reported the announcement. |
| Costco in-store | A sign at one Ohio location said customers could buy up to three cartons | Reported by Scripps News on February 12, 2025. Its report said it had asked Costco whether the limit applied nationwide; it did not confirm a nationwide cap. Scripps News |
| Costco delivery orders | Costco’s website warned that shell eggs and egg products could be short or removed from orders without notice | The notice cited supply challenges associated with highly pathogenic avian influenza. The report did not establish a fixed online purchase maximum. ABC News |
Are there egg limits at Costco?
Costco purchase restrictions were reported during the 2025 egg shortage, but the evidence is narrower than a claim of a chainwide limit. Scripps News described a three-carton sign at one Ohio store and said it had asked Costco whether that restriction was nationwide. That report does not establish a universal in-store cap.
Online ordering was a separate issue: Costco’s website notice, as reported by ABC News, warned that egg products could be unavailable or removed from delivery orders without notice. A supply warning is not the same as a stated maximum number of cartons customers may purchase.
Why were retailers limiting egg purchases?
The retailers’ restrictions and supply notices came amid egg supply challenges associated with highly pathogenic avian influenza, also known as bird flu. ABC News reported that Trader Joe’s cited ongoing egg-supply issues when announcing its daily limit. Costco’s website notice, as reported by ABC News, connected possible shortages and delivery-order removals to the same broader supply challenge.

Are the limits still in effect?
The cited reports document events in February 2025. They do not confirm Trader Joe’s or Costco egg-purchase policies as of October 2026, so shoppers should not treat those historical limits as current. Trader Joe’s announcements page has a March 25, 2026 item, but that listing does not verify an egg limit. Costco’s customer-service page about eggs concerns cage-free sourcing and is dated January 31, 2024; it does not establish a purchase restriction.
