The disclosed spending was weighted toward opposing Democrats: across all races, the PAC spent more than $2 opposing a Democrat for every $1 it spent supporting a Republican; in Senate races, the ratio was 3 to 1, according to WIRED’s October 2026 tracker. These are dated expenditure figures, not proof that spending will determine election results.
Where America PAC’s disclosed spending is concentrated
WIRED reported that, as of October 6, America PAC had spent $24.8 million in seven Senate contests—most of its $31 million in reported 2026 race spending. The tracker described those contests as close or toss-ups that could affect control of the Senate. Its totals reflect disclosed activity available at that date; they can change as filings are submitted and processed.
The $24.8 million is part of the $31 million, not an additional amount. The figures describe spending on races, rather than money raised or cash held by the PAC.
How spending is divided between backing Republicans and opposing Democrats
The reported pattern is not simply one of giving money to Republican candidates. As of October 6, WIRED’s filing-based figures showed America PAC spending more than twice as much opposing Democratic candidates as supporting Republican candidates overall. Within Senate races, the reported ratio was three dollars opposing Democrats for every dollar supporting Republicans. The figures describe the direction of independent spending, not direct contributions to candidates.

Texas illustrates the contrast
In Texas, WIRED reported more than $9.4 million in America PAC spending on ads opposing James Talarico, compared with $1.8 million backing Ken Paxton. The tracker identified two $1.3 million digital media buys against Talarico as the PAC’s largest Texas expenditures and reported that it had not bought television ads in that contest. Those amounts are reported spending as of the tracker’s October 6 snapshot, not forecasts of later activity.
Filed spending is different from fundraising and reported plans
Campaign-finance numbers answer different questions depending on what they measure. Receipts show money coming into a committee; disbursements show money going out. Independent expenditures record spending on communications supporting or opposing candidates, while direct contributions to candidates or committees are a separate category. The Federal Election Commission (FEC) lists these as distinct types of records in its guide to researching PACs and other committees.

The June filing snapshot
According to FactCheck.org’s September 24, 2026 account of the FEC filing, America PAC had raised more than $50.3 million for the cycle through June 30, 2026, almost all from Musk or his company. That filing showed about $87,000 in independent expenditures supporting federal candidates by that date. The June receipts and expenditure figures are an earlier reporting snapshot; they should not be added to, or treated as interchangeable with, WIRED’s later October race-spending totals.
The reported field-program authorization
FactCheck.org also described a New York Times report, based on two people briefed on the plans, that America PAC had authorized a $100 million to $120 million field program in at least eight states. That is a reported authorization or plan—not evidence that the PAC spent the full amount. The reported focus included Senate contests in Alaska, Iowa, Maine, Michigan and Ohio, with possible activity in North Carolina, Georgia and Texas; House races in California, Wisconsin and Washington were also expected.

Why the 2024 figure is not a 2026 spending total
WIRED reported that America PAC spent $261 million in the 2024 cycle, with about 95 percent of its funding coming from Musk. FactCheck.org gives the 2024 total as $261.2 million. Those are figures for the prior cycle and should not be conflated with either the June 2026 filing snapshot or the October 2026 race-level spending.
How to check the records and interpret new figures
The FEC’s campaign-finance data portal offers committee and candidate summaries, filed reports and downloadable data. Its PAC research guide points readers to committee reports, itemized contributions, independent expenditures, enforcement actions, litigation and advisory opinions. When comparing figures, check both the record type and the period it covers: a receipt total, a direct contribution, an independent expenditure and a reported future plan are not equivalent.

WIRED says its tracker derives daily race-level figures from America PAC filings and records payments for ads, mailers and texts. Any live-tracker figure should therefore be read with its “as of” date; later disclosures or processing can change the picture.

The disclosed amounts and the Texas ad examples document a spending strategy that includes substantial opposition advertising, alongside support for Republican candidates. They do not establish whether the spending changes voters’ choices or determines who wins. James Blair, identified by Axios as President Trump’s senior political adviser, called America PAC an “essential partner” in the 2024 get-out-the-vote operation and said its return for 2026 was a “huge boost” for Republicans. That is a political ally’s assessment, not independent evidence of the PAC’s effect on election outcomes (Axios, July 29, 2026).
