COMSOL is now the Official Multiphysics Partner of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. The multi-year partnership was announced on October 7, 2026. It is an engineering collaboration: Formula E engineers will use COMSOL Multiphysics to study problems in which several physical effects interact, and COMSOL will provide software and expertise. The announcement does not describe a consumer product, a team technical contract, or a sponsorship with disclosed financial terms.
What was announced
The partnership was announced by both COMSOL and the championship. The two statements agree on the core details:
- Date and scope: announced October 7, 2026, as a multi-year partnership. COMSOL receives the Official Multiphysics Partner designation for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship (COMSOL press release; Formula E announcement).
- Venue: the partnership was announced at COMSOL Conference 2026 Boston, where Formula E CTO Dan Cherowbrier gave a keynote on technology and engineering in Formula E, according to COMSOL’s release.
- Work area: Formula E engineers and COMSOL engineers will use COMSOL Multiphysics to investigate technical challenges in which multiple effects interact. The release names electrical, thermal, structural, electromagnetic, fluid, and battery systems as examples.
- Exploration areas: simulation apps and digital twin solutions are described as areas the parties will explore. The announcement does not say that any app or twin has been delivered.
Both companies’ statements are promotional announcements, not independent assessments. Where this article quotes them, it identifies the speaker by stated title.
COMSOL’s SVP of Product Management, Bjorn Sjodin, said: “Formula E is a great example of why multiphysics simulation matters, as multiple phenomena are at play and constantly interact with one another. We are excited to work directly with Formula E’s technology team and put COMSOL Multiphysics to work on these kinds of real-world challenges.”

Formula E CTO Dan Cherowbrier said: “Technology is at the heart of Formula E, so partnering with COMSOL makes real sense for us and truly enhances our engineering skillsets. COMSOL gives us a powerful environment for understanding complex systems where many different physical effects are connected, but the opportunity goes beyond individual simulations. We’re particularly interested in how AI-assisted modeling, agentic workflows, and digital twins can help engineers interact with models, explore designs, and make simulation insight more accessible as we continue to push the limits of electric racing.”
What multiphysics simulation means
Multiphysics simulation models several physical processes at once and lets them influence one another. Many engineering problems are handled one discipline at a time, with an electrical model, a thermal model, and a structural model each run separately. Multiphysics tools connect those effects in a single model.

A simple illustration, not drawn from Formula E’s work: a motor loses some energy as heat. That heat raises the temperature of the windings, which changes their electrical resistance. Higher resistance alters the current and torque the motor produces, and the changed behavior feeds back into the heating. Solving those effects separately can miss the feedback loop. Coupling them in one model is the kind of problem COMSOL describes as its focus.
What the partnership covers, and what it only explores
The announcement separates ongoing collaboration from areas that remain under exploration. The table below sorts each item by how the announcement describes it.
Rank #3
| Item | How the announcement describes it | Status as of October 9, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| COMSOL software and expertise | Provided by COMSOL to support Formula E engineers | Described as part of the partnership |
| Coupled-effects engineering work | Electrical, thermal, structural, electromagnetic, fluid, and battery systems | Described as the focus; no project count or schedule given |
| Simulation apps | Area the parties will explore | Exploratory; no delivered app named |
| Digital twin solutions | Area the parties will explore | Exploratory; no delivered twin named |
| AI-assisted modeling and agentic workflows | Interest voiced by Formula E’s CTO | Attributed interest, not evidence of deployment at Formula E |
| COMSOL Multiphysics v2027 | Release context tied to the GEN4 era | Planned for later in autumn 2026; availability not yet established |
AI-assisted modeling and digital twins
The CTO’s remarks are the most forward-looking part of the announcement. He described interest in AI-assisted modeling, agentic workflows, and digital twins as ways for engineers to interact with models, explore designs, and make simulation results easier to access. These are stated interests. The announcement does not say which of these tools are in use at Formula E, and nothing in it establishes that they are part of current race engineering.
COMSOL’s own blog describes system-level representations that can connect to 1D, 2D, or 3D multiphysics models, and it discusses how a detailed model of a motor, battery, or regenerative braking system might feed into analysis of the whole vehicle. That is explanatory material from the vendor. It is not a statement that Formula E has adopted any specific modeled subsystem (COMSOL blog, October 7, 2026).

| Base power output versus GEN3 Evo | 71% increase | Company-reported comparison |
| Recyclability | 100% recyclable or reusable, as described for the GEN4 race car | Company description, not independently checked |
| Recycled content | Minimum 20% in specified tires, batteries, chassis, and front powertrain kit | Company description, not independently checked |
What the announcement does not disclose
Partnership announcements often leave out the details that determine what a deal is worth. This one does not state a financial value, a number of simulation projects, a delivery schedule, or measurable milestones tied to the agreement. Readers who want to judge the partnership on its results will need later updates from either organization.
The same checklist works for any corporate partnership announcement:
- Designation versus contract: a title such as “Official Partner” tells you the relationship exists. It does not tell you the scope of work or the price.
- Deliverables: look for named outputs with dates. “Will explore” language signals intent, not a delivered product.
- Attribution: separate the company’s own performance claims from results the partnership has produced.
- Release timing: planned releases and announced capabilities can change before they ship.
- Financial terms: if none are disclosed, treat any value claim as unverified.
Applied here, the verified facts are the date, the multi-year scope, the designation, and the stated work areas. The rest is either exploratory or unquantified.
