How XRP ETFs Work—and How They Differ From Owning XRP Directly

An XRP ETF share is a security tied to XRP held by a trust; direct ownership gives you the token. Compare custody, costs, access and token use.

An XRP ETF share gives you investment exposure through a security backed by XRP held in a trust; it does not put XRP in your wallet or give you control of the trust’s tokens. Buying XRP directly means owning the token, either through a custodial platform or a wallet you control. Which route fits depends on whether you want a security in a brokerage account or the token itself, and whether you want responsibility for its custody.

How an XRP ETF works

“XRP ETF” is common shorthand for an exchange-traded product whose trust holds XRP. Investors buy and sell shares on a securities exchange, while the trust holds the underlying tokens. In the Bitwise XRP ETF prospectus, the stated objective is to reflect the value of the XRP held by the trust, less operating expenses and other liabilities. The trust calculates net asset value (NAV) using a specified benchmark and names Coinbase Custody Trust Company as its XRP custodian. Bitwise XRP ETF prospectus.

As a shareholder, you own a security representing an interest in the trust—not XRP in a personal wallet. The trust, not each shareholder, holds the tokens and controls their custody arrangements. Grayscale’s prospectus states: “While an investment in the Shares is not a direct investment in XRP, the Shares are designed to provide investors with a cost-effective and convenient way to gain investment exposure to XRP.” Grayscale XRP Trust ETF prospectus.

What you own with direct XRP

With direct ownership, you hold XRP itself. You might keep it with a platform that provides custody, or transfer it to a compatible wallet. A custodial service manages the keys used to authorize transactions. With self-custody, you control those keys and take responsibility for securing and recovering them.

A hardware wallet is optional equipment for self-custody, not a requirement for owning XRP or buying fund shares. Self-custody means you must protect your recovery information and approve transactions; losing access can prevent you from using the XRP.

Compare the two routes

What you own A security representing an interest in a trust that holds XRP. XRP itself, held through a service or in a wallet.
Custody and control The trust arranges custody of its XRP. Shareholders do not control the trust’s XRP keys. A service may control the keys, or you may control them through self-custody and take responsibility for backup and recovery.
How you access it Through a broker and the exchange listing, subject to product, account and jurisdiction availability. Through a platform or compatible wallet, subject to provider and network support.
Potential costs Fund operating expenses and liabilities, plus any brokerage or trading costs. Check the product’s current prospectus and your broker’s schedule. Trading, network or service fees may apply. Check the relevant provider and network details.
Using XRP on the network A share is investment exposure, not a token you can use for XRP Ledger transfers. You can hold or transfer the token, subject to wallet and network requirements.

The cost categories are not a claim that one route is always cheaper. The specific fund, broker, platform, account and network determine applicable costs. Tax treatment and trading hours also depend on the product and your circumstances; the prospectuses and wallet documentation cited here do not establish a universal comparison.

Check the exact product before buying

Do not assume every product described casually as an “XRP ETF” has identical legal terms, custody, fees or redemption mechanics. Read the issuer’s current prospectus and verify the product type, exchange, ticker, custodian and fee schedule. The examples below are U.S. product details stated in the cited filings; they do not describe every XRP product or jurisdiction.

  • Bitwise: Its prospectus identifies an exchange-traded product listed on NYSE Arca under ticker XRP, names Coinbase Custody Trust Company as XRP custodian, and describes benchmark-based NAV calculation. Bitwise XRP ETF prospectus.
  • Grayscale: Its prospectus says NYSE Arca trading began November 24, 2025, under ticker GXRP, and describes shares as fractional beneficial interests in a trust holding XRP. It also states that shares are not a direct investment in XRP. Grayscale XRP Trust ETF prospectus.

Which route fits your purpose?

  • Consider an exchange-traded share if you want XRP price exposure through a security in a brokerage account and do not need to hold or transfer XRP. Review the fund’s expenses and terms, along with brokerage costs and availability.
  • Consider direct XRP if you need the token itself for transfers or other supported uses. Decide whether a custodian or self-custody suits you; self-custody requires managing transaction keys and recovery information.

Neither route removes price risk: an ETP’s value is linked to XRP but affected by fund expenses and liabilities, while directly held XRP remains exposed to changes in the token’s value. This is a structural comparison, not an investment recommendation.
