Re:

CMR vs. SMR Hard Drives: Differences and Which to Choose

CMR is the safer choice for NAS, RAID, ZFS/TrueNAS, and frequent writes. SMR can suit read-mostly storage with occasional updates—if the exact drive and platform are compatible.

For a NAS, RAID array, TrueNAS/ZFS pool, or any drive that will handle frequent updates and rebuilds, choose CMR unless the storage platform explicitly supports the specific SMR implementation. SMR can be a sensible fit for a single-disk archive or read-mostly backup with occasional or sequential writes. The distinction is how tracks are recorded—not a simple measure of drive quality or reliability.

What is the difference between CMR and SMR?

Both are ways of recording data on a hard disk. CMR writes adjacent tracks without overlapping them. With SMR, tracks partially overlap like roof shingles: a narrower track remains available for reading, while fitting more tracks into the same area increases recording density.

The practical difference appears when writing or updating data. A CMR drive can generally update a track without rewriting its neighbors. With SMR, changing data in a shingled area may require the drive to reorganize or rewrite a larger band or zone. That can make frequent, random, or sustained writes slower or less predictable. Reads do not require the same reorganization; Western Digital says SMR drives retain random-read capability similar to traditional CMR drives in its October 2022 SMR technology white paper.

SMR can increase capacity density, but the number needs careful interpretation: Western Digital states that its SMR technology provides up to 11% additional areal density compared with same-generation CMR drives. That is a manufacturer’s areal-density figure, not a promise of 11% more usable capacity in every product.

Which should you choose for your workload?

Use case Practical choice Reason
Multi-drive NAS or RAID pool CMR Sustained writes, random updates, synchronization, and rebuild work can expose SMR’s reorganization costs. TerraMaster recommends prioritizing CMR for these workloads.
TrueNAS or ZFS CMR TrueNAS documentation for SCALE 25.10 says drive-managed and host-aware SMR perform poorly and are not recommended; it says host-managed SMR is unsupported in the described ZFS environment.
Single desktop or external drive with ordinary writes Compare the exact model and usage; CMR is less workload-sensitive SMR may work well when updates are occasional, but sustained or random overwrites can slow as data is reorganized.
Archive, media library, or backup target with mostly sequential access SMR may fit if updates are infrequent Higher recording density can be useful for read-mostly or occasional/sequential-write workloads. Backup patterns vary, so this is not a guarantee of suitability.
Host-managed zoned-storage deployment Host-managed SMR only if the software stack explicitly supports it The host must follow zone and write-sequencing requirements; it is not a drop-in choice for a legacy storage stack.

Why SMR implementations matter

SMR is not one interchangeable drive behavior. Drive-managed SMR tries to present a conventional block device to older systems, but performance can be unpredictable under some workloads. Host-managed SMR exposes zone requirements to the host, which must issue writes in the required sequence; incompatible or out-of-order writes can fail. Western Digital describes these distinctions in its SMR technology paper.

TrueNAS’s recommendation is specific to its documented SCALE 25.10 environment. It should not be read as a claim that every storage system is unable to use SMR; rather, match the implementation to software that explicitly supports it.

How to check whether a drive is CMR or SMR

  1. Find the full model number. A family name or capacity alone may not identify the recording method of the exact SKU.
  2. Check the manufacturer’s model-specific information. Use the product specification or data sheet. Seagate maintains a CMR and SMR drive list; confirm the listing for the exact model rather than inferring from brand or capacity.
  3. Check your NAS vendor’s compatibility list. Confirm the specific NAS model and firmware. TerraMaster recommends checking its drive compatibility list, and TrueNAS advises identifying the drive type and SMR variant with the manufacturer.
  4. Compare the rest of the specification. Recording method does not establish reliability or total suitability. Also check workload rating, capacity, interface, rotational speed, warranty, operating environment, and compatibility.

Are SMR drives bad for backups?

Not automatically. An SMR drive may suit a backup target that is written sequentially or only updated occasionally, especially if the storage system’s workload matches the drive. A backup process that frequently changes existing data, performs sustained writes, or relies on RAID rebuilding is a different workload and favors CMR. The label “backup” alone does not tell you which recording method is appropriate.

What CMR vs. SMR does not tell you

Recording method alone does not determine reliability, lifespan, or overall value. Nor does it support a universal speed multiplier: performance depends on the exact drive, firmware, workload, and storage software. There is no blanket rule that an SMR drive will fail during a RAID rebuild; the concern is that SMR’s write behavior can be a poor fit for rebuild-heavy workloads.

For consumer storage, choose based on the exact model and how it will be used. CMR is the safer default where writes are frequent, unpredictable, or central to array recovery. SMR remains an option when density matters and the system’s write pattern and software support fit its behavior.
