The Fantastic Four: First Steps opened to an estimated $218 million worldwide over July 25–27, 2025, including $118 million in North America and $100 million internationally. It ranked No. 1 at the box office, making “hit” a fair description of its debut—not proof that the film ultimately made a profit.
How much did The Fantastic Four: First Steps make on opening weekend?
Disney reported a rounded $218 million global opening for the July 25–27, 2025 weekend: $118 million domestic and $100 million international. The Associated Press reported the same rounded totals and said the international figure covered 52 territories. Disney’s July 27, 2025 report and the AP report both described a No. 1 opening.

Box-office databases list the domestic opening at $117,644,828, a more precise figure that rounds to Disney’s $118 million. The slight difference reflects the distinction between a rounded weekend estimate and a database total; the figures are not contradictory. Box Office Mojo and The Numbers report that precise domestic opening.
What was the film’s final worldwide box office?
Box Office Mojo and The Numbers list the film’s lifetime theatrical grosses as follows. Database figures can be revised.

| Market | Reported lifetime gross |
|---|---|
| Domestic | $274,286,610 |
| International | $247,572,118 |
| Worldwide | $521,858,728 |
These are final-run totals, not opening-weekend figures. The film’s worldwide lifetime gross was about 2.4 times its reported $218 million opening estimate, but that comparison describes box-office receipts over different periods—not profit or studio revenue.
Was The Fantastic Four: First Steps profitable?
The Numbers lists a $200 million production budget. Comparing that figure with the $521.9 million worldwide gross does not establish profitability: a production budget is not a complete break-even figure, and gross ticket sales do not all go to the studio. The available figures do not specify the film’s marketing and distribution costs or the theaters’ share of ticket sales, so they are not enough to calculate its net result.
How did the opening compare with other 2025 films?
In its July 27, 2025 report, AP called the opening the fourth biggest of that year to that date, behind A Minecraft Movie, Lilo & Stitch, and Superman. AP also described it as the biggest Marvel opening since Deadpool & Wolverine. These are contemporaneous rankings, not a final year-end placement.
Disney said the film was the 37th consecutive Marvel Cinematic Universe title to open at No. 1. That is the studio’s characterization of the streak, reported on July 27, 2025; the ranking itself speaks to the film’s launch, not its profitability or the health of the broader franchise.

What drove the box-office debut?
Premium and specialty formats
Disney reported that 46% of the film’s domestic box office came from premium large format, IMAX, 3D, or other specialty formats. That indicates a substantial share of domestic ticket sales came from those formats; it does not mean 46% of the film’s audience watched in them.
A new MCU setting for Marvel’s First Family
Disney framed the film as the Fantastic Four’s introduction to the MCU following Disney’s 2019 acquisition of 21st Century Fox. The studio described its setting as a 1960s-inspired retro-futuristic alternate universe. Producer and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said the rights gave Marvel “a huge opportunity to establish them, on their own, in an alternate universe.”
What one opening can—and cannot—say about superhero films
AP quoted Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian saying the opening suggested “it’s bad movie fatigue, not superhero fatigue.” That is his interpretation of the weekend, not proof that audience interest in superhero films has returned across the industry.
