Pakistan’s spring 2026 fuel shock raised ride-hailing costs for captains and fares for some passengers, but it did not mean every trip became proportionally more expensive or every captain lost money. Reports from April and May document individual losses and city-specific fare changes; they do not establish a current October fare survey or a representative captain’s net income. Pakistan’s petrol price was announced at Rs398.96 per litre effective October 9, 2026, but that fuel figure alone cannot tell you what a ride costs today.
What changed in spring 2026
TechJuice reported petrol at Rs458.41 per litre on April 3, 2026, up from Rs321.17 in its early-March comparison. It also cited high-speed diesel at Rs520.35 per litre on April 3 and described an earlier March increase of Rs55 per litre. These are dated fuel-price figures, not ride-hailing fares.
In April, Dawn reported the experience of Qamar Abbas, an inDrive captain in Karachi. Abbas said his per-kilometre rates had not changed since 2018, when petrol cost Rs120 per litre, and compared that with about Rs322 per litre at the time of his interview. He told Dawn his monthly take-home income had been Rs100,000 before the war and had fallen by half over the preceding 30 days. That is one captain’s account, not an industry-wide earnings measure.
TechJuice also described one driver who had previously taken home Rs3,500 a day and was then operating at a net loss. The report does not establish how common that outcome was. Taken together, these accounts show why higher fuel costs can squeeze earnings even when a platform does not automatically change its pricing.

Why fuel costs, fares and take-home pay do not move in lockstep
A captain’s fuel bill is an operating cost; a passenger’s fare is a platform price; and the captain’s take-home pay is what remains after costs and other relevant deductions. They are related, but they are not interchangeable measures. A higher petrol price can reduce a driver’s margin without triggering an equal fare increase, while a fare change does not by itself reveal what the captain keeps.
When Dawn asked about pricing, inDrive communications manager Parisey Tariq said the company did not apply a flat, automatic increase tied to petrol. She said pricing reviews consider overall market conditions, including distance, route efficiency, driver availability, time and broader operating costs. That account describes the company’s stated approach; it does not establish what any individual passenger will be quoted.

Other factors also affect the economics of a ride. Dawn’s May reporting discussed longer average trips and greater fuel consumption per ride, as well as driver availability around Ramazan and Eid, demand and passengers’ alternatives. A change in trip length or availability can influence fares and earnings independently of the pump price.
What the May Yango fare figures show
In a May 10 report, Dawn attributed cumulative fare changes of up to 20% in Karachi and Lahore and up to 35% in Islamabad and Rawalpindi to Yango. The company attributed those changes to longer average trip distances and higher fuel consumption per ride. These are platform-attributed figures for the reported period, not current October fares or a guarantee that every ride in those cities rose by that amount.

Dawn also offered an illustrative fuel-cost calculation: a small ride-hailing car using about 15 litres a day would cost Rs3,795 to fuel at Rs253 per litre, the price it cited for February 27, and Rs6,225 at Rs415 per litre, its May figure. The article described that as a 64% increase. It associated the example with cars such as a Suzuki Alto or Suzuki Cultus and reported a daily distance of 200–250 km for a single Yango vehicle. This is an example based on stated fuel use and prices, not audited fleet data or a measure of every captain’s costs.
What commuters reported paying—and how they responded
Dawn’s April reporting described the passenger side of the squeeze. Ayesha Emaad Khan, who commuted 15–17 km in Karachi, said a one-way fare that had initially cost about Rs900 rose to Rs1,700–Rs2,000 after the fuel hike. She reported fares of Rs2,500–Rs3,000 on days with rallies, protests or rain. These are her reported experiences, not standard fares for that route or city.

Dawn’s May article quoted commuter Namrah saying, “We are burning what we are earning.” Its reporting described people responding to higher costs by carpooling, taking rickshaws or motorcycles, working from home, or using ride-hailing apps less. Carpooling may lower a passenger’s cost, but the article also noted that irregular schedules and safety concerns can make it impractical. The best alternative depends on the route, timing, availability, comfort and safety—not just the quoted price.

Pakistan’s Petroleum Division announced petrol at Rs398.96 per litre and high-speed diesel at Rs395.72 per litre on October 8, 2026, effective October 9. That is the latest fuel-price context here; it is not a current fare survey or evidence of captain net earnings. April and May reporting cannot establish October city-by-city inDrive or Yango prices, representative current captain income, or current driver incentives. The spring fare percentages should not be mechanically recalculated using the October pump price.

For readers comparing a ride with another way to travel, use a fare quoted for the actual city, route and time rather than a spring 2026 percentage. For captains, a simple log of distance and fuel spending can help track operating costs, but it cannot reduce consumption or guarantee a profit.
