Private browsing changes what your browser keeps during a session. It does not change the fare an airline is selling. The evidence available does not show that repeated searches reliably push a particular traveler’s fare up, and it does not show that a private window reliably returns a lower one.
That is not the same as saying airlines never personalize prices. The sources reviewed do not support a universal conclusion in either direction. What they do support is narrower: the same flight can show different prices at different times, and tracking tools are a more practical way to act on that than switching browser windows.
What private browsing actually does
Incognito mode in Chrome, or a private window in Firefox or Safari, stops the browser from saving history, cookies, and site data from that session once you close it. That is useful for keeping a shared computer tidy. It is not a pricing setting. A private window does not alter the seats an airline has for sale, does not change the fare class it assigns to a seat, and does not hide your network address from the websites you visit.
So the question is never whether incognito “unlocks” a fare. The real question is whether a site behaves differently for a visitor with stored cookies than for one without them, and whether any observed difference is caused by that.

What the studies found
A cookie study covering 41 routes
A study summarized in the University of North Carolina at Greensboro repository gathered prices on 41 routes across American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines to test whether cookies affected fares. The record available does not show a publication year, and it does not give enough methodological detail or an effect estimate to say how large any cookie-related difference was, or whether one existed.
The sample is also narrow. Three U.S. carriers on 41 routes do not represent every airline, every booking website, or every country. The study is useful as one piece of evidence, not as a final answer about the airline industry.

A 2021 study of airline-site cookies
“Price Discrimination in the Online Airline Market: An Empirical Study,” published in 2021 in MDPI’s journal Information, reports that visitors whose browsers kept an airline-site cookie were shown the same prices as first-time visitors in the cases it tested. That cuts against the simple belief that a stored cookie automatically inflates a fare.
It does not prove that no airline or booking site ever uses information about a particular user. It describes the conditions the authors tested, and readers should treat it as evidence about those conditions.

Why a price change is not proof of targeting
UC Berkeley Haas has published a research explainer on airline fares. It notes that airlines release only a limited number of fares for a given flight at any time, and it cautions against reading every price movement as individual targeting. This is an explainer, not a statement of policy from any airline, but it gives a practical reason for many price swings: the set of seats offered at each fare level changes as the flight fills.
Why the same flight shows different prices
When two searches return different numbers, the most common explanations do not involve you at all:

- Fare availability changes. Seats move between fare buckets as the flight sells, so the cheapest available fare may disappear within hours.
- Time to departure changes. Fares often move as the departure date approaches, in either direction.
- Offers differ by source. Google says its flight search draws on more than 300 travel partners, including airlines, online travel agencies, and aggregators, but its results may not show every available offer. Two sites can display different prices for the same flight.
- The itinerary was not identical. A different flight number, connection, airport, cabin, or passenger count is a different product.
How to test a fare yourself
If you want to know whether a private window or a cleared cookie changes what you see, run a controlled comparison rather than a single refresh.
- Choose one exact itinerary: origin, destination, dates, flight numbers, cabin, and passenger count.
- In a normal browser window, record the total price, the time of the search, the booking source, and the fare conditions shown.
- In a private window, search the same itinerary at roughly the same time and record the same details.
- Compare total price including any fees and bag rules the site displays. A lower base fare with extra charges is not a cheaper ticket.
- Repeat the comparison at several times of day over a few days. One matching or mismatched result is not enough to establish a pattern.
Tracking fares instead
Google Flights lets you turn on tracking for a route, a set of dates, or a specific flight. It can email you when a tracked price changes significantly. It also provides notices when prices are likely to rise, or when a current fare is close to expiring. Google’s help guidance states that “Prices are unlikely to drop before you book” when its model predicts with high confidence that a fare will not fall before departure, and it explains that the predictions are based on past price trends and that future prices may not behave as predicted.

Tracking will not tell you the lowest fare that will ever appear. It gives you timely information so you can decide whether a current price is acceptable.

The practical takeaway
Use a private window if you want a clean session, and clear cookies if you prefer, but do not expect either step to turn a higher fare into a lower one. Set a tracking alert for the exact flight you want, compare total prices across booking sources, and buy when the total fits your budget. That approach rests on evidence that the same flight genuinely changes in price over time. The incognito approach rests on a belief the evidence does not support.
