In NumberBarn’s ranking of phone numbers purchased through its service in 2024, New York City’s 929 ranked first nationally, while California’s 626 ranked second. The results were close: 929 accounted for 10.64% of purchases in the dataset and 626 for 10.32%. This is a comparison of NumberBarn purchases—not a nationwide count of every number assigned, ported, or chosen by consumers.
How NumberBarn measured area-code popularity
NumberBarn published its 2025 ranking of the top 20 area codes on March 26, 2025. It is based on telephone numbers purchased through NumberBarn during calendar year 2024. In that dataset, New York’s 929 led with 10.64% of purchases, and California’s 626 followed with 10.32%.
The ranking answers a specific question: which area codes were most represented among that provider’s purchases in that year? It does not establish an all-provider or all-consumer ranking. “Popularity” can refer to different measures, including purchases, number assignments, number availability, or utilization; those measures are not interchangeable.
What 929 and 626 cover
929: New York City
NumberBarn identifies 929 with New York City. It is one of multiple codes associated with the city: three New York City codes together accounted for 21.5% of purchases among the top 20 codes in the 2024 ranking. That combined share is for those three codes within the top-20 purchases, not for all NumberBarn purchases.

626: Pasadena and nearby communities
NumberBarn identifies 626 with Pasadena. The code ranked second in its 2024 purchase dataset, but it does not represent all of California. Other California codes in the same top-20 ranking included 949 (Irvine), 310 and 213 (Los Angeles), and 909 (San Bernardino).
California has 40 area codes, according to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). The state’s numbering plan includes overlays: multiple area codes can serve the same geographic region. For example, the CPUC describes 657 as an overlay to 714, implemented on September 23, 2008; the 657/714 region is predominantly in Northern Orange County, with portions of Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties.

Popularity is not the same as utilization or availability
An area code can rank highly in a marketplace without having the highest share of its numbers assigned. The FCC’s 2007 report described New York City’s 212 as the most utilized code in its reporting period, with 73.5% of numbers assigned to customers. That is a historical utilization figure, not a current popularity ranking and not a comparison with NumberBarn’s 2024 purchases.
Availability is another separate question. A purchase ranking does not show how many numbers remain available in an area code, whether a particular number can be obtained, or what a carrier will offer. The ranking also does not establish current assignment or dialing-plan details.

How to verify an area code or dialing plan
- Check the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA) reports for geographic area-code lists, in-service dates, planned codes, and dialing-plan summaries.
- For a California code or regional description, consult the CPUC’s area-code information, which lists codes and overlay groupings.
- Confirm the relevant region and dialing rules separately from the popularity ranking. An overlay means more than one code may serve a region, and numbering information can change.
