That is different from banks exchanging an electronic image of a check: image processing is still check processing, not automatically an EFT. The distinction affects how the payment moves, how quickly the account may be debited, and what to look for on a statement.
What is an eCheck?
The term is used for more than one process. In a consumer payment context, it often means a merchant uses information from a paper check to initiate a one-time electronic funds transfer from the checking account. The merchant may do this at a retail checkout or after receiving a mailed check. The paper check supplies the account and payment information; it does not necessarily travel through conventional check collection.
A separate process occurs when banks exchange electronic images of checks as part of check clearing. That remains check processing, even though the item moves electronically between financial institutions. The Federal Reserve describes this bank-to-bank image process in its electronic check processing FAQs.
How do traditional checks, converted checks, and check images differ?
| Payment path | What moves | Effect on the account | What happens to the paper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Traditional paper check | The check is collected through the conventional check system, physically or using an image in the process. | The account is debited as a check payment. | Handling varies; an image may take the place of physical movement, and substitute checks may be used where needed. |
| Check converted to EFT | Check details initiate an electronic transfer, commonly an ACH debit. | The transaction is an EFT and may debit the account sooner than conventional check processing. | The merchant may retain or destroy the original, or return it after scanning; practice varies. |
| Electronic check image processing | Images and associated check information move between financial institutions. | It remains check processing; an electronic image alone does not mean the payment is an ACH debit. | Image records support processing; a substitute check may be used where needed. |
These are different transaction paths, not simply three names for the same kind of payment. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) explains that an EFT debit may be paid more quickly than a conventional check debit, but that does not establish a fixed number of days or guarantee a particular posting date.

What does check conversion mean for the person who wrote the check?
If a merchant converts a check, the payment is a one-time EFT from the checking account rather than a conventional check debit. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s Electronic Fund Transfer Act examination manual says the consumer must authorize the transfer. The merchant should also provide notice that the check is being converted; according to the OCC, notice might be a sign or information from the cashier.
Because an EFT debit may happen sooner, do not assume the funds will remain available for the period you associate with a paper check. Read any notice provided and keep enough money in the account to cover the payment. The original check may not be returned to you, depending on the merchant’s process.

How can you tell how a check was processed?
The CFPB says: “Your monthly statement will often indicate if a check was processed as an electronic transfer, such as an ACH payment.” Look for an EFT or ACH description rather than assuming that every check-related entry is a check debit. If the entry is unclear, call your bank or credit union and ask how it classified the transaction. The OCC says EFTs should appear on the monthly statement with transaction details.

What protections apply to an electronic check payment?
The CFPB says consumers have some additional protections when a check is converted into an EFT. The exact rights and steps for resolving a problem depend on whether the transaction is treated as an EFT or a check item and on the rules that apply. This distinction is a reason to confirm how a disputed transaction was processed rather than assuming that every check-related payment follows the same procedure. The FDIC’s Electronic Fund Transfer Act examination manual provides regulatory context for EFTs; it is not a substitute for guidance about an individual dispute.

- For an unclear entry: Ask your financial institution whether it was handled as an EFT or a check payment; the label matters when you are trying to understand the transaction or address a problem.
Check handling and statement descriptions can vary by merchant and financial institution. The Federal Reserve’s check-processing FAQs explain image-based bank processing, while the CFPB’s explanation of a check turned into an EFT addresses the consumer payment path.
