In March 2021, Zoomo announced a $12 million interim funding round led by AirTree Ventures. The company said the money would fund development and production of its next-generation vehicles and its global expansion. Its offer at the time bundled commercial e-bikes and e-mopeds with weekly or monthly subscriptions, servicing, financing, and fleet management. Everything below describes that 2021 position. Locations, customers, and fleet size are historical unless a later date is given.

What Zoomo announced on March 5, 2021

Zoomo’s company announcement dated March 5, 2021 said the company had secured $12 million, with AirTree Ventures leading. TechCrunch reported on the raise on May 3, 2021 and described it as an interim round. Read together, the two sources place the round in the middle of a company still building its product and footprint, not at the end of a growth cycle.

Funding history

The announcement placed the new round within a short run of financing. The figures below are as stated by Zoomo in 2021; the announcement does not itemize how its cumulative total was built up.

Round or figure Date stated Amount Source
Series A Announced August 2020 $11 million Zoomo announcement, March 5, 2021
Interim round, led by AirTree Ventures Announced March 5, 2021 $12 million Zoomo announcement, March 5, 2021; TechCrunch, May 3, 2021
Cumulative funding over the prior 24 months Stated March 5, 2021 $26 million Zoomo announcement, March 5, 2021

Who invested

  • Led by: AirTree Ventures.
  • Existing investors who provided follow-on support: Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC), Maniv Mobility, and Contrarian Ventures.
  • New investors named in the announcement: Winthrop Square and Wisdom VC.

What the money was for

Zoomo said the funding would go toward developing and producing its next-generation vehicles and toward global expansion. The announcement does not give a budget split between those two uses, a timetable, or a target number of new markets. Readers should treat “global expansion” as a stated goal, not a completed plan with dates.

How the subscription model worked

Zoomo’s offer was built around a subscription rather than an outright sale. TechCrunch’s 2021 reporting described two payment tracks, one for individual delivery workers and one for businesses.

Feature Individual rider Corporate or enterprise partner
Payment cadence Weekly subscription (TechCrunch, May 3, 2021) Monthly subscription (TechCrunch, May 3, 2021)
Typical customer Gig workers, including food-delivery riders Enterprise delivery operators and fleet managers (Zoomo announcement, March 5, 2021)
Partner-linked offers Discounts tied to Uber Eats and DoorDash partnerships (TechCrunch, May 3, 2021) Named enterprise customers included Cornucopia, Gorillas, and Just Eat Takeaway (Zoomo announcement, March 5, 2021)
Subscription price Not stated in the 2021 sources Not stated in the 2021 sources

The absence of prices matters for a personal-finance reader. The 2021 coverage shows how payments were structured, but not what a rider or business paid in any city, so no cost comparison with buying a bike can be drawn from these sources.

What the subscription bundled

Zoomo described its offer as a full-stack package. The announcement and TechCrunch point to five components:

Zoomo’s chief executive, Mina Nada, explained the logic in the announcement: the first products were built for gig workers, and their demands for quality vehicles, on-demand service, flexible financing, and security features shaped the platform later sold to enterprises.

Where and for whom Zoomo operated in 2021

The company announcement listed these operating locations at the time:

  • Australia: Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane.
  • United States: San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, and Philadelphia.
  • United Kingdom: London and Liverpool.

TechCrunch described continental Europe and additional US states as intended expansion areas. Those are plans from 2021. The sources do not establish whether Zoomo operates in any of these places today, and a 2021 customer relationship should not be assumed to continue.

Company-reported scale and figures

  • More than 10,000 vehicles globally: a fleet figure Zoomo reported at announcement time in March 2021. It is a company-reported number, not an audited count, and it is not a current fleet size.
  • 75 percent potential CO2-emissions reduction: Zoomo attributed this figure to research in its announcement but did not name the original publisher or year. It is an unverified claim that Zoomo cited, not an independently confirmed result.

What has changed since 2021

The most recent Zoomo material used here is dated 2025, and it covers different ground from the 2021 announcement.

Subscription terms in Zoomo’s August 18, 2025 help article

Zoomo’s help article dated August 18, 2025 says a subscription includes a Zoomo bike, a battery with charger, keys, a phone holder, and a lock. It also sets out maintenance and damage responsibilities:

  • Monthly maintenance checks are required.
  • Normal wear and tear is covered.
  • Damage beyond normal use is the rider’s responsibility.

The article does not state a price or the cities where the service is available, and it notes that terms may vary by location or change over time. Because the phone holder and lock are part of the subscription, a rider should not assume they are extra purchases.

Later company announcements

Zoomo’s newsroom index lists announcements through May 2025, including updates involving Uber Eats in France and DoorDash in Toronto. Those entries show that Zoomo kept announcing partnerships after 2021. They do not confirm current service availability or the status of the 2021 customer relationships.

Checklist before comparing a subscription with buying

Because the sources do not give prices or current coverage, a reader comparing a Zoomo-style subscription with buying a bike should confirm the following with the provider directly:

  1. The all-in monthly or weekly cost, and whether it includes the battery, charger, keys, lock, and phone holder.
  2. Whether service is offered in your city, and how quickly same-day servicing is available there.
  3. The maintenance schedule you must follow to keep the subscription valid, such as the required monthly checks.
  4. How “normal wear and tear” and “damage beyond normal use” are defined, and what you would pay for a repair.
  5. How long the contract runs, how it ends, and what happens to the vehicle when it does.

What Zoomo said in its March 2021 announcement

Three quotations from the announcement show how the company and its partners framed the round. They are reproduced as published.
