The displayed 2025 estimates came from different ZIP codes and had different validity dates. For a fair comparison, value the specific trucks using the same method, location, date, mileage, condition, and sale channel.
What the resale estimates show—and what they do not
Kelley Blue Book’s displayed estimates for two 2025 Colorado Crew Cab models with 5-foot beds favored the ZR2. However, the estimates were localized to different markets and valid through different dates, so they are not a controlled comparison of trim-level value retention.

These are dated KBB estimates, not guaranteed sale prices. KBB says its fair purchase price draws on actual consumer purchase prices, registration databases, and other third-party sources, but a localized estimate is not evidence that the trim itself caused a value difference. KBB’s 2025 ZR2 valuation page and KBB’s 2025 Z71 valuation page show estimates that may change with market, condition, and date.
Use broader projections only as context
KBB’s 2026 resale-value release projected about 45% average value retention for 2026 model-year vehicles after five years, using average-condition vehicles at 75,000 miles. Its 2026 Best Resale Value award winners were projected around 55% or more. Those figures are broad projections, not Colorado ZR2-versus-Z71 findings; Colorado was not among the pickup award winners. A separate KBB estimate puts five-year depreciation for the Z71 at $24,506 and its residual value at $21,089. That is a model-level ownership projection and cannot be compared directly with the localized used-vehicle estimates above or used to infer how the ZR2 fares. KBB’s Z71 page presents that projection.
What you pay for: ZR2 and Z71 equipment
Chevrolet’s 2026 model-year listings show a $6,100 difference in starting price: $44,600 for the Z71 and $50,700 for the ZR2. These are manufacturer-listed starting prices for 2026, not used values or predictions of local discounts.

Chevrolet describes Baja mode as exclusive to the ZR2: “This mode optimizes power delivery, stability and traction control when driving over sandy terrain.” The ZR2’s additional hardware is relevant to buyers who expect rougher trails, sand, or obstacles; someone who mostly drives pavement or mild access roads may not benefit equally from every added component. That is a use-based assessment of the listed equipment, not a measured resale effect. Chevrolet’s 2026 Colorado page lists the trim features and starting prices.
How towing changes the comparison
Chevrolet’s 2026 trailering chart lists a 6,000-pound maximum trailer weight for the ZR2 and up to 7,700 pounds for the standard TurboMax configuration when properly equipped. The maximum depends on the exact truck and load; passengers, cargo, and accessories use capacity. Check the vehicle’s door-jamb payload label and owner’s manual rather than relying on a trim name alone. Chevrolet’s 2026 Colorado trailering chart provides the listed ratings.

How to make a fair value comparison
- Match the market and date. Enter the same ZIP code and check both vehicles on the same day using the same valuation service.
- Match the vehicle details. Keep model year, cab, bed, mileage, condition, and sale channel as close as possible. Compare private-party estimates with private-party estimates, or trade-in with trade-in.
- Account for the actual trucks. Record packages, tires, accident and maintenance history, and modifications. The cited sources do not quantify how individual accessories or aftermarket changes affect Colorado resale value, so do not assume they add value.
- Compare likely proceeds with what you will pay. A higher resale estimate does not guarantee a better financial return if the purchase price is also higher. Use the negotiated price and the sale channel you realistically expect to use.
For a buyer choosing between the two, the ZR2’s extra off-road equipment may justify its higher starting price when that capability will be used. The Z71 offers a lower listed 2026 starting price and may suit buyers whose needs do not call for the ZR2’s specialized hardware. Neither trim has a proven universal resale advantage on the available estimates.
