Zacks Premium and Morningstar Investor both sell stock research by subscription, and both listed at $249 a year when their official pages were checked in 2026. The price is not what separates them. Zacks ranks stocks by how analysts are revising their earnings estimates. Morningstar compares a stock’s price with its own analyst fair value estimate. Those are different questions with different inputs, so a rating from one platform is not a rating from the other. The better choice depends on which question matches how you invest.
What each subscription includes
Zacks Premium
Zacks’ official Premium page lists the Zacks #1 Rank List, the Industry Rank List, Premium Screens, a Focus List, research reports, an Earnings ESP filter and additional tools. The Zacks product catalog describes Premium as including daily Zacks Rank updates, equity research, a 50-stock Focus List portfolio and premium screens. The catalog listed $249 per year when checked in 2026. Confirm current pricing at Zacks Products and the feature list at Zacks Premium, because offers change.
The published feature set is built around individual stocks. If most of your holdings are funds or ETFs, that matters more than any single tool.
Morningstar Investor
Morningstar describes Investor as one subscription covering stock, fund and ETF research, along with ratings, screening, reports, watchlists and portfolio tracking and analysis. Its Investor features and price page is the primary reference for scope and pricing, and its Investor FAQ covers subscription terms.

The portfolio tools are the part most readers will evaluate separately. Morningstar’s portfolio tools page describes:
- Holdings setup: linking an account or entering positions manually.
- Monitoring: tracking holdings with custom views and performance charting.
- X-Ray analysis: breaking down asset allocation, sector exposure and fees.
- Stock Intersection: identifying where positions overlap across holdings.
Two different questions behind the ratings
Both platforms publish a categorical view on stocks, and both are easy to misread as a grade of the same thing. They are not. The inputs and the intended interpretation differ, so read each one on its own terms.

Zacks Rank: earnings estimate revisions
Zacks’ methodology organizes the Zacks Rank around analysts’ earnings estimate revisions and names four components:
- Agreement: whether revisions move in the same direction.
- Magnitude: how large the revisions are.
- Upside: the Most Accurate Estimate compared with the consensus.
- Surprise: recent earnings surprise behavior and whether it persists.
Zacks describes its approach as quantamental, combining model-driven signals with analyst interpretation. In practice, the rank answers a question about direction and momentum: is the earnings outlook for this company improving or deteriorating, and how strongly do analysts agree? Methodology details are at Zacks methodology.

Morningstar stock rating: price against fair value
Morningstar’s stock rating asks a different question: how does the current share price compare with Morningstar’s analyst fair value estimate, with uncertainty taken into account? Its equity research methodology describes a fundamentally focused valuation process, and the rating reflects the price relative to that fair value. The methodology document linked here is dated September 29, 2022, so it establishes the framework rather than every current detail. Check Morningstar Equity Research Methodology (2022) alongside newer Morningstar material before relying on a specific process claim.

Performance claims: what can and cannot be compared
Zacks’ Premium start page reports historical performance for the Zacks Rank back to 1988. It is a hypothetical portfolio calculation prepared by Zacks, based on the construction, period and exclusions the page discloses. Treat it as Zacks’ own description of past results: it is not a forecast, and it has not been independently verified in this article. See Zacks Premium start page for the method.
No comparable published outcome figure for Morningstar Investor can be checked against the sources cited here, so this article makes no return comparison between the two.

How to choose: a workflow test
- Start with the question you ask most often. If your question is whether earnings expectations are improving, the estimate-revision framing of Zacks Rank matches it. If your question is whether a stock is priced below what the business is worth, Morningstar’s fair value comparison matches it.
- Check what you hold and what you plan to buy. Morningstar Investor explicitly covers stocks, funds and ETFs. Zacks Premium’s published features are built around stocks. A mixed portfolio points toward the broader scope.
- Test depth on names you follow. Open the company reports and commentary for two or three holdings or candidates during any trial period, and judge whether they answer your questions.
- Run your own screen. Zacks offers Premium Screens and Morningstar offers screening. Check whether the criteria, and any saved views, let you narrow the universe the way your process does.
- Compare portfolio tracking with what you already use. If you track positions in a brokerage account or a spreadsheet, see whether Morningstar’s account linking, X-Ray and Stock Intersection add something that setup lacks.
- Confirm the terms. Check the trial length, renewal price and cancellation process before subscribing.
Because the two signals answer different questions, it can make sense to read one alongside the other. Keep the two ratings separate, though. A stock can show strong estimate momentum while trading above a fair value estimate, and the platforms do not reconcile those views for you.
Limits of this comparison
This comparison relies on each company’s published pages, methodology documents and pricing as checked in 2026. It did not test either platform’s data quality, usability or results, and it does not establish which rating is more accurate or profitable. Morningstar’s methodology document dates from 2022 and may not describe its current process in full.
- Pricing and trial offers can change without notice.
- Feature availability can differ by plan and region.
- Zacks’ performance figure is provider-reported and hypothetical.
Affiliate or referral relationships with either company are not part of this article.
The Bottom Line
Neither platform is better across the board. Zacks Premium suits readers who want to follow earnings estimate revisions and use rank lists and stock screens. Morningstar Investor suits readers who want to compare share prices with fair value estimates and who also hold funds or ETFs or want portfolio analysis. Choose based on the analytical question you need answered, then confirm the live price and trial terms before subscribing.
