Zecco.com’s commission-free pitch challenged the cost of trading, but keeping trades free raised a harder question: how could a brokerage sustain the business? A comment filed with the SEC recounts Zecco’s 2006 launch of a zero-commission trading platform and says the company later reduced the offer amid business-model concerns. FINRA’s BrokerCheck now lists ZECCO TRADING, INC. as no longer registered.
How Zecco introduced commission-free trading
A public comment filed with the SEC by BrokerChooser places Zecco.com’s launch of a zero-commission trading platform in 2006. That account describes the company as part of a broader history of brokers challenging established firms on price. It is the commenter’s account, not a finding or endorsement by the SEC. Read the SEC-filed comment.
Commission-free trading changes the visible price a customer pays for a trade; it does not, by itself, establish how a broker covers operating costs or earns revenue. The available account does not specify Zecco’s revenue sources, the exact trades covered by its offer, or customer and financial results. It therefore supports the historical point that Zecco made a zero-commission offer, but not a detailed account of how the company’s economics worked.
Why the offer reportedly changed
The same comment says concerns about the business model materialized and led Zecco to reduce its zero-commission offer. This signals that the initial pricing was not sustained unchanged, but the account does not establish a complete timeline, the size or terms of the reduction, or the specific revenue changes behind it. Treat the change as the commenter’s description, not an SEC conclusion.
