On August 25, 2023, quick-commerce company Zepto announced a $200 million Series E financing at a reported $1.4 billion valuation, making it India’s first startup to reach unicorn status that year. Those figures describe the August 2023 transaction, not Zepto’s current valuation.
How much did Zepto raise, and what was its valuation?
Zepto raised $200 million in Series E financing. Cooley, which advised the company on the transaction, said the round valued Zepto at $1.4 billion. Reuters independently reported the same financing amount and valuation on August 25, 2023.
A private company’s valuation is not the same as cash raised: the $200 million was the financing amount, while $1.4 billion was the reported value assigned to Zepto following the round. The unicorn label refers to a privately held startup valued at $1 billion or more. At the reported $1.4 billion valuation, Zepto crossed that threshold.
Who invested in Zepto’s Series E?
StepStone Group led the financing. Goodwater Capital, Nexus Venture Partners, Glade Brook Capital, and Lachy Groom also participated, according to Cooley’s transaction announcement.

How did the round compare with Zepto’s previous reported valuation?
TechCrunch reported that Zepto had been valued at $900 million in May 2022. Compared with that reported figure, the August 2023 valuation was $500 million higher. The two figures are reported private-company valuations, not evidence of a public-market price or an audited measure of the company’s worth.
TechCrunch also reported, citing co-founder and CEO Aadit Palicha, that the 2023 round did not include a secondary transaction. In other words, the report described the financing as new investment in the company rather than a transaction in which existing shareholders sold shares as part of the round.

What was the fundraising backdrop in India?
The funding announcement came during a period of lower startup fundraising in India than in the previous two first halves. TechCrunch attributed the following totals to Tracxn:

These are reported totals for Indian startups across the first half of each year, not amounts raised by Zepto. The comparison helps explain why the company’s financing stood out in 2023, but it does not by itself show how Zepto’s business was performing.

What did Zepto say it planned to do with the funding?
In TechCrunch’s August 25, 2023 report, co-founder and CTO Kaivalya Vohra said: “Even with this capital, we want to maintain our discipline, avoid complacency, and push hard to hit EBITDA positivity,” EBITDA being a measure of operating performance before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization. This was the company’s stated objective at the time; it is not evidence that Zepto later achieved that goal.
