What YC’s own guidance rewards is a clear explanation of what you are building, who you are, and what you have actually done. The mistakes worth avoiding are the ones that make a company harder to understand: marketing language, vague praise for founders, padding, and over-rehearsed pitches.
The application for the Winter 2027 cycle is open. According to YC’s application page as accessed on October 8, 2026, the on-time deadline is November 2, 2026 at 8 p.m. Pacific, and on-time applicants receive a decision by December 11. Check that page before you submit, because cycle dates are the most likely part of this guidance to change.
What the “hack” question actually asks
YC’s application includes a prompt asking about a time you most successfully “hacked” a non-computer system to your advantage. Paul Graham’s guidance on applying describes this as a wildcard, and the word means resourcefulness: finding an unconventional way through an institution or process. It is an invitation to show independent thinking, not permission to manipulate the process, embellish a story, or hunt for loopholes.
If you answer it, pick a true example that you can describe in specific detail. Then explain what your actions reveal about how you think. A small, real episode where you got around a bureaucratic obstacle for a clear reason will do more for you than a dramatic story that falls apart under follow-up questions.

Application timing for Winter 2027
| Item | What YC’s application page states (accessed October 8, 2026) |
|---|---|
| Funding cycle | Winter 2027, running January through March, in San Francisco |
| On-time deadline | November 2, 2026, 8 p.m. Pacific |
| Decision for on-time applicants | December 11 |
| Late applications | Still considered, but YC cannot promise when it will respond |
YC also encourages applicants to submit once they are ready rather than waiting for a deadline. If you miss November 2, you are not automatically out of the cycle, but you lose the certainty of a December 11 decision date.
What to avoid, and what to do instead
Avoid marketing language in place of an explanation
Graham’s guidance is blunt: reviewers want to know what the company will make, and the best answers are the most matter-of-fact ones. Open with the product and the customer problem it solves. Replace claims about transforming an industry with a plain statement of what a customer does today, what goes wrong, and what your company does differently.

Avoid vague founder praise
Saying a founder is dedicated or exceptionally capable tells a reviewer nothing they can check. YC’s guidance says a specific example carries more weight than a generic assertion. For each founder, name something they built or achieved, and give enough context that a reader outside your field understands why it mattered.
Avoid padding your answers
YC asks applicants to be concise and to cut any word that does not help reviewers understand the company, the founders, or your insight. Concise does not mean thin. Keep the context a stranger would need to follow your logic, and delete the rest.

Avoid waiting for a perfect stage
YC’s current FAQ recommends applying “as soon as you have a founding team and an idea you are excited about,” rather than waiting for significant traction. The same FAQ reports that, on average, 40% of companies funded in each batch are just an idea. That figure is useful for understanding who gets in, but it is not a forecast of your odds, and it does not say which batches it covers.
Avoid treating a previous rejection as the final answer
YC says about half of a typical batch applied more than once before being accepted, and it encourages reapplying. It also says that progress since your last application is a strong signal. Use the time between applications to make real progress, then tell YC specifically what changed. The FAQ does not define “typical batch” or name the years it covers, so treat the statement as evidence that reapplying is common, not as a probability for you.

Avoid assuming an introduction is required
YC’s current guidance says it evaluates applications equally and does not rely on introductions the way many investors do. You will see older material suggesting otherwise. A 2015 post by Sam Altman described extra consideration for a strong recommendation from a founder of a YC company, specifically for someone who had worked at a YC company, and noted that most funded founders were unknown to YC partners. Read that as a historical, narrowly scoped view, not a rule for today’s applicants.
Avoid overstating your team
YC’s FAQ says a single person can apply, while noting that one-person startups are tough and that a co-founder can help. It also says teams need to be able to build the product themselves, and that most businesses need a technical co-founder. Describe your actual team, its skills, and its gaps. A reviewer who sees an honest gap and a plan to close it will trust the rest of the application more than one who sees a team that claims to do everything.

Interviews: explain it, don’t recite it
If you reach an interview, Jessica Livingston’s 2015 interview advice applies. She tells founders to avoid buzzwords, speak plainly, and have a conversation rather than deliver a prewritten pitch. Prepare to discuss the details of your product and business, and be able to explain the product in words without relying on a demo. Do not assume every interview will follow the same script.
Reading the published figures
- 40% of companies funded in each batch are just an idea. From YC’s FAQ, accessed in 2026. The page does not specify which years the figure covers.
- 7% of recent batches had more than $50,000 in monthly revenue when accepted. From YC’s FAQ, accessed in 2026. The page does not define “recent” or name the cohorts. Do not read this as a requirement that you have revenue.
- About half of a typical batch applied multiple times before acceptance. From YC’s FAQ, accessed in 2026. It shows that reapplying is common. It does not tell you your individual chances.
A 2015 post by Alexis Ohanian said more than 10% of YC alumni had been rejected on their first application. That is a historical figure from October 5, 2015, not a current statistic, and it is not a measure of how the process works now.
