Why does the dollar sign have an S?
The Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) says the most widely accepted explanation traces the sign to “Ps,” an abbreviation for pesos, piastres or pieces of eight. In the proposed handwriting evolution, the letters were written together, with the S gradually written over the P until the combined mark came to resemble $.
That account explains the S as a remnant of the older abbreviation, rather than a letter taken from the English word “dollar.” The BEP cautions that the sign’s origin has been explained in different ways; its peso account is the leading explanation, not a proven record of every step in the symbol’s development. Spanish dollars circulated in colonial America. The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History says they were the preferred money when coins were available, and that Americans based their own dollar on the Spanish real.
