Xbox prices have changed more than once: Microsoft announced hardware and accessory increases on May 1, 2025, then announced another worldwide console price update effective August 1, 2026. The May figures below are historical U.S. recommended retail prices, not current quotes. Select first-party games were also planned to reach $79.99 during the 2025 holiday season, but that did not mean every Xbox game cost $80.

What changed, and when?

Microsoft’s May 1, 2025 announcement covered Xbox consoles and accessories, with regional price adjustments in the U.S., Europe, the U.K. and Australia and local updates planned for other countries. Prices varied by region; “global” did not mean one uniform price or percentage increase. The U.S. prices in the table are Microsoft’s recommended retail prices as of that date, not guaranteed retailer prices. Microsoft’s May 2025 U.S. price sheet lists the revised amounts.

On June 25, 2026, Xbox announced a separate worldwide console price update, effective August 1, 2026. That later change superseded the May 2025 U.S. console prices. The 2026 announcement did not provide a new price sheet for the controllers and headsets listed below, so those 2025 accessory prices should not be read as current.

What were the May 2025 U.S. recommended prices?

These are the U.S. amounts on Microsoft’s May 1, 2025 sheet. They are a dated reference, not a live-price guide.

Those are also dated recommended prices; they do not establish what a retailer charges in October 2026. Microsoft’s U.S. console price sheet.

What is the later console increase?

Xbox Wire said the worldwide console price update took effect August 1, 2026. The company described the increase by storage tier in U.S. dollar amounts:

2 TB model Sunset; no increase amount stated

The announcement expresses the increases in U.S. dollars, but local retail prices and currencies can differ. Xbox said it would sunset the 2 TB model; this is not the same as announcing a specific new 2 TB price. For current purchase decisions, check the price shown by a retailer in your region rather than extrapolating from either historical U.S. sheet. Xbox Wire’s June 25, 2026 announcement.

Why did Xbox prices go up?

Microsoft’s stated reason in 2025

In May 2025, Microsoft attributed its price changes to wider market conditions and rising development costs, as reported by the Associated Press. The company also said, “We understand that these changes are challenging.” Microsoft did not specifically cite tariffs in that report, so tariffs should not be presented as its stated explanation. Microsoft’s stated reason in 2026

For the later console update, Team Xbox said console storage and memory prices had risen “more than 2.5x” and expected “another doubling by the fall of 2027.” Those figures are Microsoft’s account of component costs and its forecast, not an independently verified measurement or guaranteed future outcome. Xbox Wire’s June 2026 statement.

Were Xbox games really going to cost $80?

Microsoft planned to price select first-party games at $79.99 during the 2025 holiday season, according to the Associated Press; GameSpot described the planned price as $80. This applied to select new first-party releases, not all Xbox games, and the sources do not identify which titles were affected. The plan should be understood as a 2025 announcement, not a universal or current price list. Associated Press coverage and GameSpot’s report on the planned game price.

Ways to reduce the cost

In its June 2026 update, Xbox described several possible ways to lower upfront spending. These are options to check, not guarantees that a particular offer is available or suitable for every buyer.

  • Certified refurbished: Xbox said Certified Refurbished Consoles available through Microsoft Stores could be up to US$100 off MSRP. Availability and the active discount depend on region and stock. Microsoft Store’s Certified Refurbished Consoles information.
  • Previously played or trade-in consoles: Xbox said it was working with retail partners on these options but did not name the retailers in the announcement. Check local stores for actual stock, condition, trade-in value and terms.
  • Financing: Xbox mentioned eligible 0% APR financing for up to 12 months through partners, as well as buy-now-pay-later options. Payment terms vary by region; review the provider’s eligibility rules, fees, repayment schedule and consequences of missed payments before choosing a plan.

For a personal-finance comparison, consider the total amount paid—not only the monthly installment—and compare it with a refurbished or previously played console and the cost of waiting. An advertised “0% APR” offer can still have eligibility requirements or other terms that affect the total cost.

How to check the price that applies to you

  1. Identify the exact product: record the console’s storage and edition, or the specific accessory. Series S and Series X variants are not interchangeable price references.
  2. Use your country’s currency and retailer: Microsoft’s U.S. recommended prices do not establish the local price in another country, and recommended prices are not necessarily retailer selling prices.
  3. Check the date and offer terms: confirm whether a listing is a current price, a sale, a refurbished offer or a financing promotion. Include shipping, taxes and financing costs when comparing what you will pay.
  4. For games, check the individual title: the 2025 $79.99 plan concerned select first-party games; it is not evidence that every Xbox game has that price.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
