The studies available on this question mostly measure how people perceive cafés, why they choose them, and how they feel while working in them. A few lab and office studies add useful detail on noise and focus, but none tests a café directly against home or an office on output. What a café often changes is the set of conditions around the work: a different room, some ambient activity, and a sense of being out of the house. Whether those conditions help depends on the task, the person, and the sound level.
What the studies actually measured
The café-specific evidence is small and comes from different settings, so it helps to separate what each study looked at before drawing any conclusion.
| Study | Setting and sample | What was measured | What it cannot show |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pascual, University of the Philippines Diliman thesis, 2014 (thesis record) | Survey of 60 purposively selected university students, plus observation and documentation of four coffee shops | How students described coffee shops, which they saw as a middle place between home and library. Comfort and relaxation were reported as conducive to informal learning. | A general effect on worker output. The sample is small and selected, and the findings are about perception. |
| Garner, Iowa Journal of Communication, 2012 (article) | Account of why people use coffee shops | Reported uses include solitary work, studying, leaving home, and productivity. Participants seemed to value doing an activity alongside others even without conversation. | Whether social presence raises output. It describes a motive, not a result. |
| Gwin, Illinois State University thesis, 2023 (thesis record) | Case study of one café in a U.S. Midwest college town: 33 hours of observation over six weeks and interviews with eight regular working patrons | Valued features included a warm, familiar atmosphere, lively acoustics, daylight, comfortable seating, and chances to socialise as a secondary activity. | Measured productivity. These are patrons’ perceptions in one local setting. |
| Braat-Eggen, Reinten, Hornikx, and Kohlrausch, Frontiers in Built Environment, 2021 (article) | Laboratory study of 70 students exposed to simulated open-plan study sound scenarios. Not conducted in cafés. | Perceived disturbance and self-estimated performance, plus measured performance on several tasks | How a real café performs. Laboratory simulation has limits that the authors note. |
| Kang, Ou, and Mak, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, 2017 (record) | Survey of 231 occupants across 19 Chinese universities, in open-plan research offices | Acoustic environment had the greatest influence among five indoor environmental quality factors studied | Anything specific to cafés. It is an office survey. |
Taken together, these sources describe why people choose cafés and how sound affects focus in controlled conditions. They do not rank cafés against other places for output.
Why a café can feel like a better place to work
The studies suggest several reasons the shift feels real even when output is not measured. None of them is a proven productivity mechanism, but each explains why the experience can differ from home.

A middle place between home and the library
Pascual’s student participants described cafés as sitting between the home and the library: somewhere you are not alone with household distractions, but also not in a formal study room. That in-between quality can make starting a task easier for some people.
Working alongside other people
Garner reports that café users seemed to value doing an activity in the presence of others, even without talking to them. This ambient social presence is one plausible reason cafés feel less isolating than a spare bedroom. Whether it improves output is not established.

Comfort, light, and atmosphere
Gwin’s interviews point to warmth, familiarity, daylight, and comfortable seating as features regulars valued. These are preferences reported by a small group of patrons in one town, not measured gains in work done.
Noise: perception and performance are different things
Background sound is the factor most often blamed or credited for café focus, and the Braat-Eggen study shows why a single answer is not enough. Sound changed how disturbing students found the environment. Measured performance, however, depended on the task.

| Task in the laboratory study | Did sound scenario significantly affect performance? |
|---|---|
| Logical reasoning | Yes, significantly affected |
| Reading comprehension with text memory | No significant effect reported |
| Mental arithmetic | No significant effect reported |
The authors state the finding for two of the tasks directly in the abstract: “No significant effect of the sound scenarios was found on performance of students working on the reading comprehension task with text memory and the mental arithmetic task.” The study was run on students in a laboratory with simulated sound, so it cannot be transferred unchanged to a busy café.
The practical point is that a noisy room can feel more distracting than it measurably is for some tasks, and can be more harmful for others. Reasoning-heavy work seems more exposed to sound than the tasks in this study.

Matching the setting to the task
The most defensible way to think about cafés is as a fit question. Some work may suit a lively room; other work may need quiet, privacy, or a stable connection. The studies do not establish a universal ranking, so treat the following as decision prompts rather than findings.
- Starting or routine work: a change of scene and a little ambient activity may help some people begin.
- Reasoning, writing, or dense reading: consider a quieter setting, since the lab study linked sound to reasoning performance.
- Confidential calls or sensitive documents: a café offers little control over who can hear or see your screen.
- Calls and meetings: speech from neighbouring tables is an obvious interruption risk.
- Power and connectivity: confirm outlets and network reliability before committing to a long session.
- Cost and travel time: the trip and any purchases count against the time you save by avoiding a commute or distractions at home.
The first set of prompts draws on the studies. The last three are practical considerations, not findings from them.

How to test the shift on your own work
If you want to know whether a café helps you, rather than assuming it does, a simple log is more informative than impression alone.
- For two weeks, note each work session’s location, task type, planned length, and start time.
- Record interruptions, including noise you noticed, and whether you stopped to deal with them.
- At the end of each session, rate how much of the planned work you finished and how difficult the task felt.
- Compare sessions by task type rather than by location alone, since the studies suggest task matters.
- Keep the café where the log shows it helps, and move reasoning-heavy or confidential work elsewhere.
Some readers who want more control over background sound use noise-cancelling headphones in cafés. The studies support the idea that sound affects perceived disturbance, but they do not show that headphones improve focus or output.
Coworking spaces are another option for readers who need a more controlled setting. Availability, pricing, and terms vary by city, so check them locally before committing.
What is still unclear
- No cited study measures output for café workers compared with other settings.
- The café studies involve small or selected samples, mainly students, patrons in one U.S. town, and observation rather than controlled trials.
- The noise findings come from a laboratory with simulated sound, and the office survey concerns universities in China.
- Pascual and Gwin describe comfort and atmosphere, not performance.
For a personal finance reader, the practical takeaway is modest: a café may be a good workplace for certain tasks and a poor one for others, and the only reliable way to know which applies to you is to track your own work.
Harvard Business Review’s David Burkus described a reader’s choice to use a coworking space to focus in a 2017 column, which illustrates that people change locations to find focus. It is anecdotal commentary, not an outcome study (Harvard Business Review, October 18, 2017).
