Egg Costs Rose in 2024 and 2025: Is Renting Backyard Chickens a Smart Trial?

Chicken rentals offer a low-commitment way to test backyard egg keeping as wholesale egg prices rose in 2024 and 2025. Here is what a rental includes, what it still asks of you, and why the savings are uncertain.

Chicken rentals let a household test backyard egg keeping for roughly one season without buying a coop and flock outright. The service is a real but small niche, and the case for it rests on lower up-front commitment, not on guaranteed savings. Annual USDA data show that wholesale table-egg prices rose in 2024 and again in 2025, which is the context driving interest. Those annual figures do not show what eggs cost in a grocery store today, and a rental still leaves you with daily animal care, local-law checks and flock-health duties.

What a chicken rental typically includes

A chicken rental is a temporary package of laying hens, usually with a coop and basic supplies, and some providers deliver and set everything up. Axios described a 2025 Rent The Chicken package of two to four young laying hens with feed and dishes, delivered and set up for a five-to-six-month period. Those are reported examples from one provider in one period. This article does not have a current price list or a nationwide availability map, so package contents, duration and cost should be confirmed with the specific provider and location you are considering.

Before you compare offers, confirm the following in writing:

  • Whether the coop, run, feeder and waterer are included, and what condition they are in at delivery.
  • How many hens you receive, and their age. Axios’s example used young birds that were already laying.
  • How much feed is supplied and what happens when it runs out.
  • Who collects the equipment and hens at the end of the term, and whether you can keep the hens afterward.
  • What happens if a bird dies or stops laying during the term.
  • The provider’s service area, and whether your address is inside it.

The care you still have to provide

A rental removes the purchase decision, not the chores. Associated Press reporting on backyard flocks names the recurring tasks that continue regardless of how the birds arrived: feed and fresh water every day, calcium and grit, protection from predators, cleaning the coop, collecting eggs, and the labor of all of it. Plan for those hours before you sign, because they are the part of the arrangement you cannot hand back.

What the egg-price data show

Wholesale prices rose in two consecutive years

The USDA Economic Research Service sector summary, updated September 4, 2026, reports that annual average wholesale prices for table eggs climbed in both 2024 and 2025. It also reports that the value of egg production in 2025 was $31.5 billion, up $10.3 billion from 2024. That figure is the total value of production in the industry, not the price a household pays per dozen.

Supply has been shrinking

USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service’s Chickens and Eggs 2025 Summary, published February 17, 2026, gives the production picture for the year ending November 30, 2025:

Measure Value, year ending November 30, 2025 Change from 2024
Total U.S. egg production 105 billion eggs Down 4%
Table egg production 90.1 billion eggs Down 4%
Average layers 365 million Down 3%
Annual production per layer 288 eggs Down 1%

Fewer hens and fewer eggs per hen both point to tighter supply. Supply is one input to price, but the USDA data here do not measure retail price movement.

What the data do not show

Do backyard eggs save money?

The honest answer is that it depends on your flock, your feed costs, your location and how many eggs the birds actually lay, and none of those is guaranteed. Axios’s 2025 illustration is useful for seeing the moving parts. It estimated that two hens under three years old might produce 8 to 14 eggs a week during spring and fall. The same example assumed a $500 coop and fencing bought by the owner, and $20 a month for food and upkeep. Those figures came from an interview, reflect one household’s situation, and are not a market average.

Using only those figures, the owner-built setup costs $500 plus about $120 in feed and upkeep over six months, or $620 before counting any eggs. The egg yield is the uncertain part. Output drops outside spring and fall, and the 8-to-14 range cannot simply be extended to a full year. A rental changes the first line item, since you pay a package fee instead of building the coop, but the rental fee is location- and plan-specific and is not given here.

Expert comments in the same coverage were skeptical of the shortcut. Kathy Shea Mormino, a chicken keeper, blogger and author, told Associated Press: “There are no free eggs, there are no inexpensive eggs in keeping chickens.” Kate Perz, animal science coordinator for Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, said of evaluating the economics: “It’s not always cost-effective.”

Cost item Figure reported Source and qualification
Coop alone About $200 to $2,000 Expert estimate in Associated Press reporting; varies with size and build
Feeders and waterers About $8 to $50 or more Associated Press reporting; depends on type and size
Feed, calcium, grit, predator protection, labor Amount not stated Named as ongoing costs in Associated Press reporting; household figures vary
Rental package fee Not stated Location- and plan-specific; confirm with the provider

USDA ERS notes that feed is generally the most significant production cost across livestock. That is a broad agricultural point, not a backyard budget, but it explains why feed is the line to watch in any household comparison.

Check local rules before you commit

Local rules are the most common reason a backyard flock fails after it has already been arranged. Associated Press reporting describes residents who discovered restrictions only after they had acquired birds, and who had relied on informal answers that turned out to be wrong. Rules differ by municipality, and no national permission applies. Work through these steps before booking:

Flock health and biosecurity

Avian influenza is a real concern for backyard flocks. Associated Press reporting, citing an interviewed expert, identifies wild waterfowl droppings as a transmission route. The recommended precautions are simple and should be in place from day one: wash hands after handling birds or coop equipment, keep a pair of footwear dedicated to coop work, and keep birds away from wild-bird droppings. If birds die suddenly without an obvious cause, contact USDA for guidance and testing.

For current outbreak guidance, consult USDA APHIS and your state or local animal-health authority, since conditions change and a news report is not a substitute for those agencies.

The USDA APHIS Animal Welfare Act page describes standards for certain animals and activities. It does not establish that a particular backyard chicken rental falls under the Act, so do not assume it does or does not. Ask the provider how it handles bird welfare, transport and care standards.

Rent, buy hens, or keep buying eggs

Each option trades upfront cost against timing, care and flexibility. The table below uses only the figures established above.

Factor Rent a package Buy a coop and hens Keep buying eggs
Up-front cost Package fee, location- and plan-specific; not stated here Coop about $200 to $2,000 (expert estimate); plus feeders and waterers None beyond the grocery bill
Time to first eggs Young laying hens may lay sooner; no start date is guaranteed Chicks begin laying at about 4 to 4.5 months (USDA ERS, table-egg types) Immediate
Daily care and labor Full daily care Full daily care None
Local rules Must be checked against your municipality and HOA Same Not applicable
Keeping the flock after the term Depends on provider terms; confirm before signing Yes, if rules allow Not applicable

Who a rental suits

A rental fits a household that already has room, permission and time for daily chores, and wants to learn how a flock behaves before committing money to equipment. It fits less well for anyone expecting a guaranteed grocery saving, or for anyone who has not yet confirmed local rules.

Rent the chickens as a trial, not a budget plan. Track eggs, feed and hours for the first season, and compare them against the price you are actually paying at the store that month.

The Bottom Line

Chicken rentals can lower the cost of trying backyard egg keeping, but they do not reliably cut your egg bill. USDA data show wholesale egg prices rising in 2024 and 2025 and supply falling, yet no current retail series confirms what you will pay today. Confirm the package contents, your local rules and the daily labor before you commit, and judge the savings only against your own store prices and your hens’ actual output.
