Those comments are examples, not evidence that most or all staff opposed the decision. Woolworths said the change reflected falling demand; in January 2025, it announced plans to bring Australia Day promotions back.
What did Woolworths staff say about the decision?
PerthNow reported on 26 January 2024 that leaked comments from a Woolworths-managed online employee forum objected to the company’s decision. Some reportedly compared the absence of Australia Day merchandise with the retailer’s promotion of other cultural celebrations. PerthNow attributed the forum messages to the Daily Mail.
The comments show that some employees disagreed, but a set of leaked posts cannot establish how widely that view was held among Woolworths staff.
Why did Woolworths stop selling Australia Day merchandise?
On 11 January 2024, Woolworths Group announced that Woolworths and Big W would not stock special Australia Day merchandise that year. The company said demand for those products had gradually declined and acknowledged that 26 January had become the subject of broader discussion about what the date means to different people. It said Australian flags would remain available year-round. The announcement concerned special themed merchandise—not a decision to stop selling Australian goods or to cease marking the long weekend. ABC News reported the announcement and its context.

Then-CEO Brad Banducci gave a commercial explanation in an ABC 7.30 interview on 24 January 2024. He said recent sales had been “less than $1,000 a store over the month of January” and that seasonal goods were typically imported, requiring a 10–12-month buying lead time. Those figures and the lead-time description were Banducci’s explanation; the interview coverage did not provide an independently audited sales series.
How did the public react, and why is 26 January contested?
The merchandise decision drew political and public responses. Opposition Leader Peter Dutton urged Australians to boycott Woolworths, while Reconciliation Australia welcomed the decision, according to the ABC’s coverage of the announcement. Those reactions formed part of the broader debate over the date; they do not, on their own, establish the company’s motive.

Views about 26 January are not uniform. The ABC describes many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people regarding it as Invasion Day or Survival Day. Supporters of retaining it as the national day argue that changing the date would be divisive and would not address Indigenous disadvantage. These are perspectives held by different people and advocates, not positions shared by everyone in either group. ABC News outlines the debate.
What did Woolworths say about Australia Day and staff?
Banducci said the company was not trying to cancel Australia Day. In a company message dated 24 January 2024, he wrote: “As a proud Australian and New Zealand retailer, we aren’t trying to ‘cancel’ Australia Day.” He also asked customers to treat staff respectfully. SBS reported his comments.
