Wigan Athletic chairman Talal Al Hammad apologized on 21 March 2023, a day after the EFL deducted three points from the club for another late player-wage payment. He said resolving the remaining wage issues was the club’s immediate focus. That March penalty affected the 2022/23 Championship table; a separate EFL decision in May brought a further four-point deduction for the following season.
Why did Wigan Athletic lose three points in March 2023?
On 20 March 2023, the English Football League announced an immediate three-point deduction for Wigan Athletic in the 2022/23 Championship table. The stated reason was that the club had again failed to pay player salaries in March. The EFL said this breached an agreed decision entered into in January, triggering a suspended sporting sanction. What did Talal Al Hammad say?
In a response reported by BBC Sport on 21 March, Wigan’s chairman apologized and said the club would work to make amends. He said: “Our immediate focus is to resolve the remaining wage issues.”
Al Hammad also said: “I stand by our mantra that ‘actions speak louder than words’, and I expect to be judged on those actions.” BBC Sport, 21 March 2023.

How was the later four-point deduction different?
The EFL announced a separate four-point deduction on 26 May 2023, to apply in the 2023/24 season. This sanction followed Wigan’s failure to deposit an amount equal to 125% of its forecast monthly wage bill by a deadline set by an Independent Disciplinary Commission. The EFL said the club would therefore begin the season on minus eight points, following the earlier four-point sanction for wage-payment failures. EFL announcement, 26 May 2023.
The May decision was not the penalty Al Hammad addressed in his 21 March response. It concerned a separate requirement and came more than two months after the March wage-payment deduction. The EFL’s published decision sets out the wage-payment allegations and the failure to meet the deposit requirement. EFL Independent Disciplinary Commission decision.
