In July 2025, the High Court assessed the loss under the Financial Services and Markets Act at £646,178,248 and considered additional claims. In March 2026, it ruled on consequential matters including interest, credits and costs. HP can pursue the judgment against Mike Lynch’s estate, but the precise amount payable and whether any later appeal changed the position have not been established here.
Why the original $4.55 billion claim is not the current damages figure
The case arose from HP’s 2011 acquisition of Autonomy and civil claims concerning representations made before and in connection with the acquisition. The High Court substantially found for HP on liability in 2022. HP’s original claim was at least $4.55 billion, but that was the amount claimed, not the damages ultimately assessed.
In the July 2025 quantum judgment, Mr Justice Hildyard assessed the FSMA loss at £646,178,248. The judgment also considered other personal and direct-loss claims. The judge said: “I consider that HP’s claim was always substantially exaggerated.” Read the High Court’s July 2025 quantum judgment.
How the reported figures differ
| Figure | What it represents | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| At least $4.55 billion | HP’s original claim, as recorded in the High Court’s July 2025 judgment. | It is not the damages figure assessed by the court. |
| £646,178,248 | The FSMA loss assessed in the July 2025 quantum judgment on the basis of the court’s findings. | It is one component of the damages exercise, not a stated all-in payment total including later interest and costs. |
| Approximately £740 million | HP Inc.’s rounded description of the July 2025 ruling in its 2025 annual report. | It predates the March 2026 consequential ruling and should not be treated as the final amount payable. |
The figures are in different currencies and refer to different stages or components of the case. They should not be compared as if they were competing estimates of the same final bill.

What the court decided in March 2026
On March 24, 2026, the High Court dealt with consequential issues following the damages assessment: currency conversion, credits for recoveries from related claims, pre-judgment interest on losses, costs and interest on costs. Those rulings affect what may ultimately be payable, but the available judgment information does not establish a single final collectible total. A detailed costs assessment may also matter.
The court refused the estate permission to appeal on the four grounds it presented. Mr Justice Hildyard said: “Accordingly, I shall not give permission to appeal on any of the four grounds put forward by the First Defendant.” He also noted that the estate could apply to the Court of Appeal. Can the estate still appeal, and is the case over?
The High Court’s refusal of permission was not itself a ruling that no further appeal could be sought: the judge expressly left open an application to the Court of Appeal. The appellate position after March 2026 has not been established here, so it would be premature to say that the litigation is finally over or that the judgment is beyond challenge.
HP’s 2025 annual report described the July ruling as finding approximately £740 million owed by Lynch’s estate. That is HP’s corporate summary of the July decision, not a final all-in figure after the March 2026 rulings on interest, credits and costs. HP Inc.’s 2025 annual report.
