Sometimes. U.S. federal crop insurance may cover crop losses caused by fire, but payment depends on the crop’s policy, whether hail and fire were excluded, when the damage occurred, how the fire started and spread, and whether other fire insurance also applies. Report the loss promptly and let the insurer inspect the crop before destroying or abandoning damaged acreage.
When can crop insurance cover fire damage?
Fire can be an insured cause of loss under federal crop insurance, but there is no blanket guarantee that every fire-related loss is covered. The policy’s current crop provisions and special provisions, the facts of the loss, and the producer’s elections determine whether a claim qualifies. The USDA Risk Management Agency’s 2025 Loss Adjustment Manual directs adjusters to check the policy’s treatment of fire and whether other fire insurance applies.
The damage must also fall within the policy’s insurance period. Under the Common Crop Insurance Policy Basic Provisions, the insured must establish that the loss occurred during that period and resulted from a cause insured under the applicable crop provisions. See the Basic Provisions. An individual claim cannot be decided from the fact that a field burned alone.
Does it matter how a wildfire started?
Not necessarily in the simple way people often assume: a fire does not have to begin with a natural ignition to be potentially covered. RMA’s wildfire FAQ says an uninsured cause may start a fire, while an insured cause—such as excessive heat, drought, or excessive wind—causes it to spread. The cause of ignition and the forces that drove the fire can therefore be separate questions in the loss investigation.

There are limits. RMA’s loss-adjustment guidance says losses remain uninsurable in areas where the ignition source remains attributable to arson or another man-made cause. It also recognizes that fire experts may identify areas where natural conditions caused a man-made-started fire to become a natural disaster. The agency’s historical determination FAD-80 discusses how excessive wind or drought may cause such a fire to spread much farther than it otherwise would. Current crop-year policy language and procedures govern a current claim; the determination is not a promise of coverage for a particular loss.
What exclusions and other insurance can change payment?
Hail-and-fire exclusion
The Common Crop Insurance Policy allows an insured to elect to exclude hail and fire as insured causes of loss. If that election applies, damage from hail or fire is handled under the applicable exclusion form rather than treated as covered fire damage. Check the policy election and declarations with the agent or Approved Insurance Provider (AIP).

Separate fire insurance
If both federal crop insurance and another fire policy cover the same crop loss, the producer should not expect two full payments for that loss. The RMA Loss Adjustment Manual limits MPCI liability to the smaller of the computed crop-insurance indemnity or the amount by which the fire loss exceeds indemnity paid or payable under the other insurance. The adjuster is instructed to establish whether separate fire insurance covers the crop in the field, or tobacco in the barn when applicable.
What should you do after fire damage?
- Notify your crop insurance agent or AIP promptly. RMA’s crop-insurance damage FAQ, updated August 2026, says notice of loss should be given within 72 hours of initial discovery of damage or production loss, and no later than 15 days after the insurance period ends—even if the crop has not been harvested.
- Confirm oral or in-person notice in writing. RMA advises confirming notice given by telephone or in person in writing within 15 days. Keep a copy and record when and how you submitted it.
- Wait for an inspection before taking action that affects appraisal. Contact the AIP before destroying or abandoning damaged crop, or putting acres to another use. Give the adjuster a chance to inspect and appraise the damage; representative sample areas may need to remain intact for a later appraisal.
- Cooperate with the claim investigation. Show the damaged crop and provide requested records or documents. Photos and available fire-origin or official incident documentation may help preserve the facts, although RMA’s reviewed materials do not set one universal evidence checklist for every crop and fire.
Does crop insurance cover smoke damage?
Smoke damage is crop-specific, not a universal benefit. RMA says resulting conditions such as smoke-taint may be insurable for certain crops under their applicable provisions. Its wildfire FAQ explains that grape coverage requires actual physical damage from an insurable cause; inability to market grapes for any reason, by itself, is not enough.

RMA’s underwriting standards index lists a separate 2027 Fire Insurance Protection – Smoke Index standards handbook for grapes, released in August 2026. That specialized material is not evidence that the same smoke coverage applies to every crop. If smoke or taint is the main issue, ask the agent or AIP which crop provisions or endorsements apply to your crop and what evidence of physical damage is required.

- Crop and policy: Identify the applicable crop provisions, endorsements, and special provisions.
- Fire election: Confirm whether hail and fire remain insured causes under your policy.
- Other insurance: Check whether a separate policy covers the crop and how overlapping indemnities are coordinated.
- Timing: Establish whether damage occurred during the insurance period and give timely notice.
- Cause and appraisal: Be prepared for the adjuster to assess ignition, spread, physical crop damage, and production impact.
- Smoke rules: Verify whether your crop has applicable smoke-specific provisions and what they require.
Federal crop-insurance coverage and availability can vary by crop, state, county, policy year, and endorsement. Your policy documents and the AIP’s claim determination control the individual claim.
