You do not have to buy the add-on; you can simply choose not to share. The US prices below are from Disney’s pricing page dated September 23, 2026, and may differ by country or billing provider.
What Disney means by a Household
Disney defines a Household as the devices associated with the subscriber’s primary personal residence and used by the people who live there. Its stated policy is that a Disney+ subscription cannot be shared outside that Household. See Disney+ Help Center’s “Sharing your Disney+ subscription,” updated May 21, 2026.
Disney says it looks at factors such as devices regularly connecting to the same internet connection and regular activity from a device. The company also says it does not collect and use precise geolocation data to determine a Household. These are examples of its stated signals, not a complete technical formula or a guaranteed threshold for when a device is treated as outside the Household. How much does an Extra Member cost in the US?
Disney’s US pricing page, dated September 23, 2026, lists the following monthly Extra Member prices. Disney says the listed prices apply to new subscriptions from September 23; existing subscribers see the price change in the billing cycle on or after October 21, 2026. Third-party billing prices may differ, so check the plan and billing details on your account before making a decision.

Who can be added as an Extra Member?
The account holder pays for the monthly add-on and can add one Extra Member. Disney’s eligibility rules require that person to be at least 18, live in the same country or region as the account holder, and not have an active Disney+, Hulu, or ESPN subscription. Plan eligibility also matters.

The add-on is unavailable on certain Disney+, Hulu, ESPN Unlimited, and Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max bundle plans. Moving to an excluded bundle removes the Extra Member add-on. Because eligibility can also depend on third-party billing, check the account’s plan page before inviting someone. Disney’s Extra Member help page describes the terms.
What does the Extra Member receive?
An Extra Member gets a separate login and one profile, with the content and features of the account holder’s service tier. They can stream or download on one device at a time. That makes the option suited to one person who needs access—not to a second household wanting multiple profiles or simultaneous device use.

When to choose an Extra Member or a separate subscription

Disney does not establish a universal cheaper choice: compare the applicable add-on price with the local price of the separate plan the person actually wants. Eligible profiles can transfer to either option, but primary account-holder profiles, profiles belonging to people under 18, and profiles in Junior Mode cannot be transferred. The policy’s core distinction is between the subscriber’s Household and someone outside it, but the prices and add-on availability are not global constants. Disney’s company explainer said the paid-sharing features were available in the US, Canada, Latin America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific in September 2024; that dated rollout statement does not confirm current availability or terms in a particular country.
