Investors backed Truemeds because the Indian e-pharmacy is trying to make lower-cost alternatives to branded medicines easier for customers to understand and buy. TechCrunch reported on August 10, 2025, that the company raised $85 million, betting that affordability, consultation and planned delivery can appeal to patients prepared to wait rather than pay for the fastest service.
What Truemeds does—and why its strategy attracted investors
Truemeds is an Indian e-pharmacy and telehealth platform. Its model centers on recommending lower-priced alternatives to branded medicines, supported by consultations, recommendation technology and procurement relationships, according to TechCrunch’s August 2025 report. The company describes its mission as improving medicine affordability on its About Truemeds page.
The investment thesis is that some customers—particularly those managing ongoing conditions—may choose lower medicine costs over the fastest possible delivery if they trust the recommendation and can plan ahead. Truemeds co-founder Akshat Nayyar told TechCrunch, “There is no way to educate the user that you can have more affordable options if you can’t afford these drugs.” The strategy therefore depends not just on offering a lower price, but on explaining why a substitute is appropriate and earning customers’ confidence.
That trade-off also distinguishes the pitch from a pure speed-first delivery model. Nayyar told TechCrunch, “We believe that our four-hour delivery model is more than sufficient from a chronic patient’s perspective.” That is the company’s rationale, not independent evidence that delivery times are consistent across locations.

What the $85 million round included
TechCrunch reported that the 2025 financing totaled $85 million, with Accel leading and Peak XV Partners, WestBridge Capital and InfoEdge Ventures participating. The reported split was $65 million in primary capital for the company and $20 million in secondary funding, which generally provides liquidity to existing shareholders rather than adding that amount to company operating cash.

What the reported business figures suggest—and what they do not
TechCrunch reported that Truemeds’ revenue grew more than 66% year over year to ₹5 billion (about $57 million) in the last financial year. The same article attributed to the company 500,000 average monthly customers, 3 million customers to date and service in more than 20,000 postal codes. These are company figures reported by TechCrunch, not independently audited findings established here.
Those figures help explain the appeal of the investment story: the reported customer base and revenue growth suggest the affordability proposition had gained traction. They do not, by themselves, establish profitability, customer retention, medicine-sourcing quality or how Truemeds performs against competitors on a like-for-like basis. TechCrunch’s report did not provide an audited competitor comparison.

How Truemeds describes prescription substitutions
A lower-priced alternative is not automatically appropriate for every prescription. Truemeds’ terms and conditions, applicable from January 13, 2025, describe circumstances in which the platform may process a substitute: when the doctor permits an equivalent generic, when the prescription lists salt names rather than a brand, or after a service-provider teleconsultation and a new prescription with the customer’s consent.
This is Truemeds’ own stated process, not a general statement of the legal rules for every Indian pharmacy. Customers should follow the prescription and consult a qualified clinician or pharmacist about a proposed change rather than assume a brand-to-generic switch can always be made without approval.

What Truemeds planned to do with its growth
In 2025, TechCrunch described plans to expand fulfillment capacity and explore diagnostics through potential partnerships with national pathology labs. It also reported plans involving AI-personalized consultations and a Bengaluru office. YourStory’s August 11, 2025 coverage likewise described expansion into non-metro markets and a Bengaluru technology hub (YourStory report).
These were announced plans at the time, not confirmation that new fulfillment centers, diagnostic services or lab partnerships are now operating. The available reporting supports a growth strategy built around broader reach and potentially adjacent services, but not a claim that those expansions were completed.

The central risk in the investment thesis
Truemeds’ opportunity and its hardest execution problem are closely linked: the company must persuade customers that a lower-priced substitute is both suitable and trustworthy. Nayyar told TechCrunch that customers can be anchored to the price of a prescribed brand and question why a cheaper alternative costs less. That hesitation makes education, consultation and a reliable substitution process central to the business—not optional extras.
For investors, the bet was that Truemeds could scale that trust-based model while keeping medicines affordable and fulfillment practical beyond major metro markets. The reported raise shows investor confidence in that possibility in 2025; it does not establish that the strategy has since delivered the planned expansion or returns.
