Slim Jim helped make Randy Savage’s move to WCW work as a business deal, not just a costly talent signing. Eric Bischoff later said the sponsorship offset Savage’s reported contract cost and helped WCW demonstrate that it could attract major advertisers. The exact figures are his retrospective account; the original agreements have not been made available in the sources cited here.
How Slim Jim fit into Savage’s move to WCW
Savage joined WCW in late 1994, debuting on December 4, according to Sports Illustrated’s 2015 retrospective. Hulk Hogan encouraged WCW executive Eric Bischoff to bring Savage in, and Bischoff regarded him as a valuable performer. The recruitment therefore had more than one rationale: WCW wanted a major star, Hogan advocated for him, and the Slim Jim relationship added a commercial dimension.
Sports Illustrated reported that ConAgra Foods ended its sponsorship deal with Vince McMahon in 1995 but continued to use Savage as the spokesman for Slim Jim beef jerky snacks. Bischoff later described the sponsorship as part of the overall arrangement surrounding Savage’s arrival, rather than simply an unrelated advertising deal.
What Bischoff said the sponsorship was worth
In a 2024 interview report, Bischoff said Savage’s contract was worth $750,000 a year and that Slim Jim guaranteed sponsorship at the same annual amount. He said the arrangement offset the contract cost, calling it “basically free,” and told Inside The Ropes that the sponsorship “paid for itself.” Those figures and descriptions are Bischoff’s later recollection, not figures verified against the original contract or sponsorship agreement.

In a separate interview, Bischoff characterized Slim Jim as part of the overall contract arrangement: “And that was just a part of the overall contract, if you will, when it came time for Randy Savage to come over to WCW.” The 83 Weeks / Strictly Business interview transcript also discusses WCW executives’ influence over sponsorships integrated into programming.
Why the deal mattered beyond covering a cost
It reduced the apparent financial burden of a major signing
On Bischoff’s account, an annual sponsorship guarantee matching Savage’s reported annual contract value substantially offset what WCW was committing to the wrestler. That makes the arrangement important to the economics of the signing: the star’s cost was considered alongside a sponsor relationship associated with him. It does not establish that WCW paid Savage nothing or that Slim Jim directly paid his salary.

It offered proof of advertiser appeal
Bischoff also said the sponsor helped show other potential business-to-business advertisers that WCW could attract recognizable brands. The value, as he described it, was not only the reported guarantee but also the credibility of having a prominent sponsor linked to a high-profile performer and WCW programming.
What the available figures do—and do not—show
A separate figure sometimes associated with Savage’s WCW compensation answers a different question. Wrestlenomics’ transcription of WCW litigation payroll records reports $6,102,133 in total compensation for Savage from 1996 through mid-2000. That is not his 1994 contract value and not the Slim Jim sponsorship amount; the source notes that the 2000 figures may not cover a full year.

Was Slim Jim the only reason WCW signed Savage?
No. The available accounts also point to Savage’s value as a star and Hogan’s advocacy for bringing him in. The sponsorship helps explain how WCW could make the move more attractive commercially; it does not show that Savage was recruited solely because of Slim Jim.
