Its high-volume approach and private-label products help explain the appeal, but Costco is not automatically the cheapest option on every item. Whether it is worthwhile depends on what you buy, how much you can use, and which services you actually use.
How Costco’s business model is meant to keep prices low
Costco says its warehouses and e-commerce sites offer members a limited selection of nationally branded and private-label products across many categories. The company says volume purchasing, efficient distribution, reduced merchandise handling, and high sales volumes support rapid inventory turnover and lower gross margins than many retailers. It also says membership fees help offset operating costs and allow it to price merchandise lower. These are the company’s explanations of its model, not a guarantee that any particular item is the lowest-priced choice.
Costco describes that approach in its corporate overview. Its customer-service explanation of the annual fee says the fee helps offset operating costs so the company can price merchandise lower. Shoppers still need to compare equivalent products, package sizes, quality, and local alternatives.
Why the limited selection and Kirkland Signature matter
A limited assortment can make shopping feel more focused than at a retailer that carries many variations of each product. Costco says it buys or manufactures private-label products when quality and member demand are high and the value to members is significant. Kirkland Signature is a prominent part of that strategy; its presence alone does not establish that every item is better or cheaper than an alternative.

Membership can include more than merchandise
Costco’s fiscal 2026 annual report lists gasoline, pharmacy, food court, optical, hearing aids, and tire installation among its warehouse ancillary operations. It says these offerings encourage more frequent shopping. Costco Travel offers vacation packages, car rentals, cruises, and other travel products to members to varying degrees in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Australia. Offerings and terms vary by location, so the practical value depends on what is available where you live and what you would use.
Membership fees and Executive rewards
Costco’s U.S. customer-service page, published March 16, 2026, lists a $65 annual membership fee and an additional $65 annual fee to upgrade to Executive. It describes an annual 2% reward on qualifying purchases at Costco, Costco.com, and Costco Travel, subject to eligibility rules and exclusions. Gasoline and food court purchases are among the excluded categories, and geographic rules apply. Check Costco’s current membership terms before deciding whether the upgrade fits your spending.

In its fiscal 2026 annual report, Costco said Executive members accounted for approximately 75.2% of worldwide net sales and reported 42.3 million Executive members. Those figures show the tier’s scale; they do not explain why any individual member chooses it. The reward’s value depends on qualifying purchases, not total spending.
What renewal figures do—and do not—show
Costco reported 150.4 million total cardholders at the end of fiscal 2026, including paid members and household cardholders. It reported renewal rates of 92.3% in the U.S. and Canada and 89.8% worldwide. Costco calculates renewal using a trailing measure covering renewals seven to eighteen months before the reporting date, with certain recent expirations excluded.

These company-reported figures show that membership continues at scale. They are not a survey of why people renew, and they do not prove that a membership pays off for every household.

- Start with the annual fee. Count only the savings and services you expect to use, not everything Costco offers.
- Compare unit prices. Check the cost per ounce, item, or other relevant unit against nearby alternatives, while comparing like-for-like quality.
- Account for package size. Larger quantities help only if your household can use them before they expire and has room to store them.
- Include the trip. Consider travel time and convenience alongside the shelf price; a lower unit price may not make sense if the trip is costly or inconvenient.
- Evaluate Executive rewards separately. Estimate qualifying purchases, apply the 2% reward only to eligible spending, and check the current terms and exclusions before comparing it with the additional fee.
There is no household-specific savings calculation in Costco’s published figures. The useful comparison is your likely eligible spending and real-world use against the membership cost, not a general claim that all Costco members save money.
