What is documented is narrower. Bristol City’s chief executive confirmed that the club had conversations with Alalshikh about investment. Alalshikh had already denied reports that he would buy the club, and no deal was described as imminent. Sheffield Wednesday, the comparison in the headline, was sold to Arise Capital Partners LLC in May 2026, so it is no longer open to a new buyer. The sections below separate what is confirmed from what is analysis and what remains unknown.
What Bristol City has said about Alalshikh
The club’s confirmation
Bristol City chief executive Tom Rawcliffe confirmed that the club had conversations with Alalshikh. He put the club’s position this way:

“Yes, we had conversations with him [Alalshikh] and we are up for investment but it has to be the right investment,”
Rawcliffe also said that the Lansdown family wanted to sell, that the club was open to investment, and that no deal was imminent at the time. The BBC reported the exchange, and the chief executive repeated in October 2025 that nothing was imminent.

Alalshikh’s denial
Alalshikh had denied September 2025 reports, which the BBC covered, that he was close to buying the club. A denial of a purchase and a confirmation of talks can both be accurate. Talks about investment are not the same as a bid. The reporting does not say what was discussed, whether a figure or structure was put forward, or whether any offer was made.
Bristol Sport’s response
Gavin Marshall, chief executive of Bristol Sport Group and a Bristol City director, called the takeover reports “purely speculation” in September 2025:

“It’s just purely speculation. Since Steve’s [Lansdown, owner] been open about looking for investment we’ve had a lot of speculation around different interested parties,”
Marshall also explained that Bristol City sits within Bristol Sport, alongside Bristol Bears and Bristol Flyers. He said the women’s football club sale was a separate transaction.

The seller side: why the Lansdown family is talking to investors
BBC Sport reported in March 2026 that Steve Lansdown has invested more than £280m in Bristol City over 30 years. That is a reported historical investment figure. It is not a valuation, a transfer budget, or an amount Alalshikh offered.
Lansdown’s openness to outside money is the clearest seller-side reason for the talks. It explains why conversations could take place. It does not reveal what a prospective buyer wanted.

Why Bristol City could appeal to an investor (analysis)
The points below are analysis built on the club’s stated position. None is a confirmed Alalshikh strategy.
- Stated openness. Rawcliffe said the club was open to investment, provided it was the right kind. A seller that says so is easier to approach than one that does not.
- Sporting ambition. Manager Gerhard Struber said he hoped investment could make a play-off push realistic. The report, which is undated in the coverage available, placed this alongside transfer decisions. It explains why the club might want capital. It does not describe any proposal.
- Group structure. Marshall’s description of Bristol Sport and the separate women’s club sale means a buyer would need to confirm exactly which assets any Bristol City deal covers.
Sheffield Wednesday is no longer available
The administrators announced completion of a sale of Sheffield Wednesday to Arise Capital Partners LLC, led by David Storch, alongside Michael Storch and Tom Costin. The EFL’s statement of 2 May 2026 said Wednesday had met league requirements under its new ownership and was no longer regarded as in administration. The league said it would not impose the 15-point deduction it had contemplated.

David Storch, speaking for Arise, described the appeal of the club:
“Ever since we attended the match against Norwich City at Hillsborough on 5 November and saw the excitement and enthusiasm from the fans, we’ve been hooked.”
The headline therefore compares a club whose talks were reported as unfinished with a club that has already changed hands. Any argument that Alalshikh would pick City over Wednesday is an argument about an option that no longer exists.

Why an acquisition is not a formality
EFL guidance says that an acquisition of control is subject to league and regulatory requirements. The timing can depend on the ownership structure, the origin of the funding, the number of investors, and other factors. A buyer should therefore not assume that a takeover is quick or automatic. Sheffield Wednesday’s sale shows the process can conclude, but the EFL’s conditions were part of that outcome.
