Airlines continue to buy the Boeing 737 MAX because Boeing markets it as more fuel-efficient than the aircraft it typically replaces, its four variants cover different capacity and range needs, and existing 737 operators may be able to reuse crews, maintenance systems, facilities, and spare parts. Recent orders show sustained demand, but they do not prove the MAX is universally cheaper or that any single factor explains each purchase. Its commercial appeal also has to be considered alongside the two fatal crashes, the role of MCAS, and continuing FAA oversight.
Why the 737 MAX appeals to airline buyers
Fuel and emissions claims
Boeing says the MAX uses 20% less fuel and produces 20% less CO2 than the aircraft it typically replaces. That is the manufacturer’s comparison, not an independently established saving for every airline, route, or aircraft configuration. Real-world economics depend on factors such as the aircraft being replaced, seating layout, passenger loads, route length, maintenance, and fuel prices. Boeing’s 737 MAX product information lists CFM International LEAP-1B engines across the four variants and attributes part of the 737-8’s smaller noise footprint to the engine’s higher bypass ratio and nacelle design.
Commonality for airlines that already fly 737s
For an airline with an established 737 fleet, adding a MAX may fit existing operations more readily than introducing a new aircraft family. Boeing says operators can share pilots, flight attendants, mechanics, ramp staff, maintenance facilities and programs, and common spares across a single-type fleet. That may reduce investment in training, equipment, and parts, though Boeing’s description is not a neutral study of realized costs.
Recent airline announcements illustrate the rationale. In 2026, Copa Airlines said its fleet of more than 110 737 jets—including NG, MAX, and converted freighters—offers operational commonality. Malaysia Aviation Group cited commonality with its existing fleet of more than 50 737s when announcing a 2025 order. Copa’s 2026 announcement and Malaysia Aviation Group’s 2025 announcement document those stated buyer reasons; they do not quantify the savings each airline achieves.

Different sizes and route profiles within one family
The MAX family gives airlines a choice of capacity and published range. Boeing’s typical two-class seating figures and maximum-seat figures differ: the first reflect a typical cabin configuration, while the second are maximum published capacities. The ranges are Boeing’s published figures, not guarantees for every payload or operating condition.
| Variant | Typical two-class seats | Maximum seats | Published range |
| 737-7 | 135–160 | 172 | Up to 3,800 nautical miles |
| 737-8 | 162–189 | 210 | Up to 3,500 nautical miles |
| 737-9 | 178–193 | 220 | Up to 3,300 nautical miles |
| 737-10 | 185–210 | 230 | Up to 3,100 nautical miles |
These figures come from Boeing’s published 737 MAX specifications; actual airline layouts and operating conditions affect capacity and range. Boeing positions the -8 as a core-market model, the -9 for more capacity, and the -10 for high-demand routes. Copa said its -8s and -9s serve high-density shorter flights as well as some of its longest MAX routes, showing how an operator may use different members of the family across its network.

What recent orders and deliveries show
Boeing reported an order book of more than 7,200 MAX aircraft and more than 2,300 deliveries through the end of June 2026 in its 2026 announcement of FAA certification of the 737-7. These are Boeing-reported figures tied to that date. They indicate substantial commercial commitments, but do not independently establish a ranking of aircraft popularity or explain why customers placed each order.
The announcements also show that airline decisions can combine several aims. Malaysia Aviation Group announced a firm order for 18 737-8s and 12 737-10s, with options for 30 more, citing fleet renewal, efficiency, capacity, commonality, and travel demand. Copa’s 2026 agreement covered up to 60 aircraft and was linked to fleet modernization and network growth. An order signals a commitment, not proof that one stated benefit alone drove the purchase.

Why popularity does not settle the safety question
The MAX is part of the long-running 737 line, but it also introduced significant changes, including larger LEAP-1B engines and flight-control software changes. The U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee’s 2020 final report concluded that the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) played a critical role in both fatal crashes. The family resemblance to earlier 737s should not be taken to mean the MAX had no significant design changes. The committee’s investigation and final report describe the crashes and certification controversy.

After the Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines crashes, the FAA stopped allowing Boeing to issue airworthiness certificates for MAX aircraft in 2019. In September 2025, the agency began allowing Boeing to issue certificates for some aircraft on alternating weeks. After eight months of comparable production-quality findings, the FAA announced that Boeing could resume issuing certificates for all 737 MAX and 787 aircraft effective July 20, 2026. The agency said it would still conduct inspections, audits, and monitoring of Boeing’s production system. This changed who issues certificates in the process; it did not end FAA oversight. How to interpret the MAX’s commercial appeal
The strongest explanation is a combination of fleet fit, model choice, and manufacturer-stated efficiency: airlines that already operate 737s may value commonality, while the family offers several capacity and range profiles. Order announcements document continuing demand and some buyers’ stated reasons. They do not establish that the MAX is always less costly than Airbus’s A320neo family, or that its claimed fuel savings determine every airline’s choice. A fair comparison for a particular airline would need to match cabin configuration and route assumptions, operating and acquisition costs, delivery timing, training and maintenance needs, and fleet compatibility.
