Five months later, Spirit filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection again, on August 29, 2025, and said it would shrink its fleet and redesign its network. The public record reviewed for this article does not show how that process ended, so the claim cannot be treated as settled. This article explains what the “new Southwest” means, what each airline announced, and how to compare them on a real trip.
What the “new Southwest” refers to
“New Southwest” is shorthand for a change in how Southwest Airlines sells seats. For most of its history, Southwest was known for two-bag-free travel, no change fees and a single open-seating fare structure. In March 2025, Southwest moved toward the segmented pricing that legacy and low-cost carriers already use. Its March 11, 2025 announcement covered several changes:
| Area | What Southwest announced on March 11, 2025 | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Checked bags | Customers outside certain exemptions pay for checked bags on bookings made from May 28, 2025. | Exemptions apply to specified fare types, loyalty members and cardholders. They are not universal. |
| Fares | A new Basic fare was introduced. | Read the fare’s rules for what it excludes before comparing it with other fares. |
| Rewards | Rewards earning and redemption rules were changed. | Check the current loyalty program terms for your account type. |
| Flight credits | Expiry rules were set for new flight credits. | Confirm the expiry date on any credit before relying on it. |
| Seating | Assigned seating and extra-legroom plans were described. | Seat fees are added to the trip total, not included in the base fare. |
| Distribution | Distribution through online travel agencies was expanded, including Expedia. | Prices can differ by channel; compare at the same time. |
Southwest’s CEO, Bob Jordan, framed the changes this way: “We have tremendous opportunity to meet current and future Customer needs, attract new Customer segments we don’t compete for today, and return to the levels of profitability that both we and our Shareholders expect.” The change matters for Spirit because the traditional Southwest pitch was that its single fare was simple and bag-inclusive. Once bags and seats are sold separately, a headline base fare tells you less about the price you will actually pay.
How Spirit’s position changed

The August 2025 announcement is the most important update to the 2025 narrative. Spirit’s CEO, Dave Davis, said: “After thoroughly evaluating our options and considering recent events and the market pressures facing our industry, our Board of Directors decided that a court-supervised process is the best path forward to make the changes needed to ensure our long-term success.” The company said it planned to redesign its network, reduce fleet size to match profitable demand, pursue further cost efficiencies, and build out its fare options.
Spirit’s fare options
Spirit’s August 2025 plan named three options: Spirit First, Premium Economy and Value. These were announced plans. The release does not show that each option was launched on a given schedule, what it includes on specific routes, or how customers responded. Treat Spirit’s fare tiers as the company’s stated structure, and check the fare rules shown at booking for the bags, seat selection and changes included in each one.

Is Spirit cheaper after Southwest’s bag fees?
No general answer is supported by the evidence. Spirit has long sold a low base fare with bags and seats as add-ons, and Southwest’s new pricing moves it closer to that model. Whether Spirit is cheaper on a given trip depends on the route, the date, the number of bags, the seat you want and the fare type you buy. The sources reviewed do not establish a universal price advantage for either airline, and they include no consumer savings data.
To compare the two on a specific trip:
- Choose one route, one outbound date and one return date. Search both airlines in the same session and note the time.
- Record the lowest base fare each airline shows for the trip, and the fare name.
- Add a checked bag for the number of bags you will carry. For Southwest, confirm whether you qualify for an exemption under the rules for your fare, loyalty status or card.
- Add the seat you would actually choose. Do not assume an open seat is free on either airline.
- Read the change and cancellation rules for each fare. A cheaper fare that cannot be changed may cost more if your plans shift.
- Compare the totals, then repeat on two other dates. One fare on one day is not a pattern.
Scale and network: what can and cannot be compared
Southwest is much larger than Spirit and describes a broad domestic network. Its 2025 Form 10-K summary notes route-specific schedules, including up to 12 weekday roundtrips on selected routes, and its 2025 route adjustments. These are company disclosures for particular routes, not a market-share measure. No current, like-for-like 2026 comparison of Spirit and Southwest market share or financial performance was available for this article, so a claim that Spirit can match Southwest’s scale or reach cannot be verified.

What to watch before you book
- Whether Spirit’s bankruptcy process has concluded, and on what terms. The August 2025 filing is the latest development in the sources reviewed.
- Whether Spirit’s fleet reduction and network changes show up in schedules for the routes you fly.
- Whether Spirit First, Premium Economy and Value appear on your route and what each one includes.
- Whether Southwest’s bag and loyalty rules apply to your fare type or account.
- Whether a flight credit or refund from either airline is covered by the current rules before you buy.
How to read the “ready” claim
The phrase “ready to take on the new Southwest” was an executive’s assessment in March 2025, made after Spirit’s first restructuring. It describes intent and confidence, not customer wins. Spirit’s own August 2025 filing said more restructuring was needed. Judge the claim by what the airline does on your routes, at your fares, over time.
