Amazon says it does not price match because it compares its prices with competitors’ prices and aims to keep them low and competitive. That is Amazon’s explanation for its general policy—not a guarantee that every Amazon price will be the lowest, or a promise to refund you if a price drops after you buy.
Amazon’s stated reason for not matching prices
Amazon’s current U.S. customer help page says, “Amazon does not price match.” The policy wording reproduced in the Federal Trade Commission’s October 31, 2024, second amended complaint gives the company’s explanation: Amazon says it strives to maintain low, competitive prices and “constantly compare[s]” its prices with competitors’ prices so they are as low or lower than those of relevant competitors. It concludes, “As a result, we don’t offer price matching.” Amazon’s exchange help page and the FTC filing reproducing the policy text support that explanation.
This is Amazon’s stated rationale, not independent proof that Amazon always has the best price. The FTC document is a legal complaint that reproduces policy wording; it is not a court finding that Amazon’s prices are always lower.
What “price matching” means—and what Amazon offers instead
Price matching generally means a retailer agrees to meet a lower price offered by a competitor, usually when a customer asks and meets the retailer’s conditions. Amazon’s guidance says it does not provide that customer price-match service. A lower price elsewhere therefore does not, under the stated policy, entitle you to ask Amazon to match it.

| Situation | What Amazon’s guidance establishes |
|---|---|
| A competitor lists the same item for less | Amazon says it does not price match. Amazon customer help |
| The Amazon price falls after you buy | The cited help guidance does not establish a general post-purchase price adjustment or refund for the difference. |
| You exchange an eligible item for a lower-cost replacement | Amazon says it refunds the difference between the original item and the replacement; if the replacement costs more, Amazon charges the difference. This applies to the exchange described on the help page, not to an ordinary later price drop. Amazon customer help |
| You want to know if a deal price changes | Amazon describes deal and price alerts through its app or Alexa for Shopping. Alerts can help you monitor a price; they do not create a right to a refund. Amazon’s guide to checking deals |
If Amazon’s price drops after you order
A common question is whether you can get a credit or refund when an item becomes cheaper soon after purchase. The cited Amazon guidance does not promise a refund simply because the listed price fell. It describes a difference refund only when an eligible replacement is part of an exchange.
If you are considering returning the item and buying it again at the lower price, first check the order’s return eligibility, deadline, and any costs or other conditions that apply. The available guidance does not establish that returning and rebuying is always possible or worthwhile.

How to interpret Amazon’s deal reference prices
Deal labels and reference prices are separate from price matching. Amazon says its Typical or “Was” Price is the median price paid on Amazon during the previous 90 days, excluding prices paid during a limited-time deal. Amazon also says it works for deals to offer the lowest price in at least the previous 30 days. Those are Amazon’s descriptions of its deal pricing; neither amounts to a promise to match another retailer or refund a later price drop. Amazon’s explanation of deal pricing

Amazon’s seller-facing pricing materials address how offers appear in its store and action against significantly high or erroneous prices. Separately, Amazon’s 2025 compliance report says it does not require sellers to match their Amazon Store prices to prices they offer outside Amazon. These seller rules concern the relationship between Amazon and sellers; they do not create a customer entitlement to price matching. Amazon Marketplace Fair Pricing Policy · Amazon compliance report
