One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchA $1 entry from Microsoft is most often one of two things: a pending card-validation authorization that a merchant placed to confirm your card works, or a small posted charge from a real Microsoft purchase, such as a subscription, an in-app purchase, or a retried payment. The amount alone does not tell you which. Check whether the entry is pending or posted, then match it against your Microsoft account’s order history before you assume it is fraud or ignore it.
Start by checking whether the $1 is pending or posted
Your bank or card app shows the difference, and it changes what you should do next. A pending authorization is a hold that may drop off on its own. A posted transaction has settled and will stay on your statement until you dispute it or it is refunded.

| Pending, with a Microsoft descriptor | A temporary authorization, possibly a card check. Microsoft’s order-cancellation guidance says pre-authorization charges on a cancelled Microsoft Store order are reversed within 3–5 business days. | Note the descriptor and date, then check order history. Do not assume it will settle or vanish on a fixed schedule. |
| Posted, matching an order marked “Completed” or “Redeemed” in your Microsoft account | A real charge that has settled. | Confirm the item and the Microsoft account it belongs to. Dispute it only if you did not authorize it. |
| Posted, with no matching order | Could be a charge from another account, a third-party seller, or a problem you need to report. | Work through the steps below, then contact your bank. |
Your bank’s descriptor is the first clue. Write down the exact text, the amount, and the date. Those details matter if you need to talk to Microsoft or your card issuer.
Why a $1 Microsoft entry appears
Several causes are possible, and they differ in how you check them.
#1 Best Overall
- Gift Cards are shipped active and ready for use.
- This card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Funds do not expire. If available funds remain on your card after the valid thru date has passed, please call customer service for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout. No fees after purchase.
- To access your card information safely, type the complete website address shown on your Gift Card (MyGift.GiftCardMall.com) directly into your browser's address bar. Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Be cautious of phishing sites, there are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
- To report your Lost or Stolen Physical Visa Card, call Customer Service 24/7 at 1 (888) 524-1283 to cancel your Gift Card as soon as you can. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
- Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.
A card-validation authorization
A Microsoft Q&A response dated December 28, 2018 described a pending “Pending-Microsoft*Store” $1 entry as a temporary card validation, saying it generally cleared within 24–48 hours. That is a historical community answer, not a current Microsoft policy, and it does not cover every $1 entry. Treat it as one plausible explanation for a pending charge, not a guaranteed one.
A recurring subscription
Microsoft 365 and other subscriptions bill on a cycle. A small first-period or proration charge can appear on a different day from your usual renewal, so a $1 amount may be a real subscription payment you forgot about.

A purchase by someone who used the card
A family member or other person with access to your card, or to a Microsoft account linked to it, may have bought something small such as an app, a game add-on, or a media item. Check whether anyone else in the household uses the same payment method.
A retry of a declined payment
If an earlier Microsoft payment was declined, a later attempt for the same amount can post or hold on your card. This is common after an expired card or a bank block.

A shipped pre-order or split order
Some hardware and software pre-orders charge when the item ships, and a split order can bill separate amounts for separate shipments. A $1 amount is unusual for these, but it can happen with adjustment or add-on items.
An in-app purchase
Purchases made inside a game, app, or Microsoft Store listing may be billed to the same card. Microsoft lists these among the common explanations for an unrecognized charge.

How to investigate the charge, step by step
- Confirm the status in your bank or card app. Record whether the $1 is pending or posted, the descriptor, and the date.
- Sign in directly. Go to account.microsoft.com rather than following a link in an email or text. Open Manage your payments and select Investigate next to the unrecognized charge. Microsoft Support describes this page as the place to start: “If you don’t recognize a charge on your account, go to the Manage your payments page of your Microsoft account dashboard and select “Investigate”.”
- Check order history. Open account.microsoft.com/billing and confirm you are signed in to the correct Microsoft account. Compare the amount and date with the charge. An order marked In progress has not posted yet; Microsoft Support states, “Charges with a status of In progress haven’t been posted to your payment option yet.” An order marked Completed or Redeemed indicates a posted charge.
- Check subscriptions. If the charge could be Microsoft 365, open Services & subscriptions in your account and look for an active plan, a recent renewal, or a trial that converted.
- Check third-party sellers. If you bought the subscription or item through Apple, Google Play, Amazon, or another retail partner, that seller may manage the billing and cancellation. Look in that seller’s account before assuming Microsoft is the source.
If none of these explains the entry, you have a transaction you cannot match, and it is time to involve your bank.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to contact your bank and Microsoft
- You do not recognize the transaction after checking order history and subscriptions.
- You think someone obtained your card number, password, or account access.
- The charge is posted and you did not authorize it.
Contact your bank or card issuer promptly and ask about the transaction’s status and dispute options. Microsoft cautions that disputing a charge alone does not stop further charges if your payment details were compromised, so change the card number or account password as well if you suspect a breach. Then contact Microsoft support with the descriptor, amount, and date you recorded.

What is and is not established
Microsoft’s account investigation tools and order-history status labels are current and reliable guides. The card-validation explanation is plausible for a pending $1 entry, but the only source that describes it specifically is the 2018 Q&A answer. No current Microsoft guidance states that every $1 entry is a verification hold, and no source reviewed here gives a general release time for a card check. Prevalence figures for this kind of charge are also not available, so the amount alone cannot tell you how common or serious your charge is.
The three checks above, pending or posted status, the matching order, and the subscription or seller check, are the ones that settle most cases. Use them before you dispute a charge, because a dispute is hard to undo.
