A 2025 agreement with JetBlue could give United access to JFK slots for up to seven daily round trips beginning as early as 2027—but that is a plan, not a confirmed schedule.
Does United fly out of JFK now?
United’s announced JFK flights ended by 2022, according to the Associated Press. At the time of its 2025 report, the airline’s New York-area hub was Newark. United’s own company description also lists New York/Newark among its U.S. hubs. These sources establish where United centers its New York hub operation; they do not explain every factor behind the decision to end JFK service.
For a trip, check the airport shown on the specific United itinerary rather than assuming a New York-area flight departs from JFK. Newark (EWR) and JFK are different airports, and the departure airport affects ground travel as well as the flight options available.
United’s JFK service: the timeline

When United announced the 2021 return, CEO Scott Kirby said, “I have been waiting a long time to say this – United Airlines is back at JFK,” the airline’s November 2020 announcement. That statement referred to the planned return, not the later Blue Sky service.

Why Newark matters—and what the evidence does not show
United identifies New York/Newark as a U.S. hub, while its JFK presence has changed over time. That makes Newark central to understanding United’s New York operation, but the available announcements do not give a full account of the airline’s internal route economics or establish Newark as the sole reason JFK flights ended.
JFK is a slot-coordinated airport: scheduled operations depend in part on access to slots, or authorized opportunities to take off and land. The FAA administers slot allocation there and publishes holder and operator data by season; it also warns that holdings can change without notice. Slot access is therefore relevant to adding scheduled service, but the FAA information does not explain United’s 2022 exit by itself.

Historical slot figures need their date attached. In an April 2016 account of a separate Newark slot dispute, the Department of Justice said United held 73% of Newark slots at that time. That is a 2016 figure, not a current market share or evidence of United’s present slot position.
Is United returning to JFK?
United and JetBlue announced that the Blue Sky plan would provide United access to JFK slots for up to seven daily round trips from Terminal 6, beginning as early as 2027. The airlines said in July 2025 that DOT review was complete and implementation could proceed. Neither announcement specifies United’s routes or a firm launch date. “As early as 2027” signals a possible start, not a guarantee that flights will operate then or are available to book now.

Before planning around a possible return, look for a published United itinerary with a route, date, and JFK departure. Slot access and regulatory review are not the same as a confirmed operating schedule.

Compare the actual itinerary first: confirm the airport, flight time, fare, and whether the route requires a connection. Then weigh ground access from your starting point and to your destination. Neither airport is universally faster or more convenient; the better choice depends on the trip and the available flights.
