Fall Guys did not change hands as a standalone product. On March 2, 2021, Epic Games announced that Tonic Games Group, the company behind Fall Guys, was joining Epic. Mediatonic, the studio that develops the game, published a parallel announcement and FAQ. The stated reasons were shared goals, Epic’s resources and support, and a plan to improve the game, reach more players, and keep supporting its community. Neither company disclosed a purchase price or deal terms in those announcements.
What was actually announced
The March 2021 news was a corporate combination: Tonic Games Group, which owns the Fall Guys developer Mediatonic, joined Epic Games. Because the announcement covered the parent company and its studio, it is more accurate to say Fall Guys came under Epic’s umbrella than to describe a sale of one game. For a finance reader, that distinction matters, because the terms of a company-level deal are usually more complex than the headline suggests.
Mediatonic’s FAQ said the game had broken out the previous August and that the team had grown from 35 to 150+ people. That headcount is the studio’s own figure, reported in 2021, and it has not been independently audited. The company presented it as context for its ambitions rather than as a measure of the deal’s value.
The reasons each side gave
Mediatonic answered the question “Why did you choose Epic?” in its FAQ by saying the two companies had been mutual fans, had gotten to know each other, and found they shared many goals. It also said Epic loved Fall Guys and its team, and that it expected Epic’s resources to help take the game further.

Tonic Games Group co-founder and Chief Games Officer Paul Croft said: “Beyond the shared vision among our teams, we see tremendous potential in combining forces with Epic.” Co-founder and CEO Dave Bailey added: “With Epic, we feel like we have found a home that was made for us.”
Epic founder and CEO Tim Sweeney tied the deal to the company’s broader strategy, saying that Epic is invested in building the metaverse, that Tonic Games shares that goal, and that Epic needs “great creative talent who know how to build powerful games, content and experiences.”

What changed after the deal
Platform plans in March 2021
At the time of the FAQ, Mediatonic said Fall Guys would remain purchasable on Steam and PlayStation and would keep receiving updates there. It said releases on Nintendo Switch and Xbox were still being planned. On free-to-play, the FAQ said “Nothing to announce right now!” That was a statement about the situation in March 2021 and should be read in that context.
Free-to-play and wider availability in June 2022
On June 21, 2022, Epic announced that Fall Guys was becoming free to download on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and the Epic Games Store, with crossplay and cross-progression powered by Epic Online Services. This fits the stated aim of reaching more players. The public announcements do not show that every later change was already settled when the 2021 deal was announced.
The current store listing
As of the Epic Games Store listing checked on October 8, 2026, Fall Guys is described as a free, cross-platform multiplayer party game. Mediatonic is listed as developer and Epic Games as publisher, and the listing notes in-game purchases. Storefront details can change, so check the listing directly before relying on them.

None of the official announcements reviewed state a sale price, a valuation, or detailed transaction terms. They also do not reveal the financial motivations of the sellers or the buyer. Any claim that the studio sold because of financial pressure, a specific offer, or a particular valuation would go beyond the evidence. How to read a deal announcement like this one
- Identify the legal seller and buyer. Here the parent company, Tonic Games Group, joined Epic. Studio-level and game-level assets may be treated differently in any filing.
- Separate stated reasons from disclosed terms. Shared goals and resources are statements of intent. Price, valuation, and conditions are the figures that show what changed hands.
- Check the date of every claim. Platform and pricing plans in the 2021 FAQ were superseded by the June 2022 free-to-play announcement.
- Treat headcounts and player numbers as company-reported. The 35-to-150+ team growth figure comes from Mediatonic and has not been independently verified.
Applying these checks to Fall Guys shows a clear public story: a studio with a hit game joined a larger publisher that offered support, resources, and a platform strategy. The financial terms behind that move are not part of the public record in these sources.
