It is phasing them out gradually. Delta’s aircraft overview still lists both the 757-200 and 757-300, and senior executives have named 757s among the aircraft being retired as part of a broader fleet shift. Delta’s public statements explain the fleet-wide logic behind that pace. They do not explain why any individual 757 stays on a particular route, and they do not give a retirement date for the type.
What Delta has said about its 757s
Three points from Delta’s own materials frame the answer.
- The 757 is still on the listed fleet. Delta’s aircraft overview lists the Boeing 757-200 and 757-300. That shows both variants are still listed. It is not a current aircraft count, and it does not prove that every listed subfleet is flying on any given day.
- Retirements have started, but the 757 has no published deadline. At its Investor Day on November 20, 2024, Delta CFO Glen Hauenstein said that year was the first in which Delta was retiring “just over 20” aircraft, naming “757s, 767s, 320s.” That figure covers all aircraft types being retired, not 757s alone. Hauenstein described a cadence of retirements, not a schedule for the 757 itself.
- Delta is trying to run fewer aircraft types. At the same Investor Day, management said Delta had been moving from 13 aircraft families toward seven and was at 10 at that time. Those are November 2024 remarks, not a current count.
Why a gradual exit makes sense for Delta
Delta’s public statements point to four fleet-wide reasons for a phased approach. Each one is a general consideration, not a disclosed calculation for a specific 757.
Newer aircraft burn less fuel per seat
Delta’s 2024 Form 10-K states that aircraft delivered since 2019, including 38 aircraft delivered in 2024, were on average 28% more fuel efficient per seat mile than aircraft retired since 2019. The same filing reports a 6.6% fleet-wide fuel-efficiency improvement since 2019. Both figures compare groups of aircraft across the whole fleet. Neither measures the fuel cost of a 757 or the economics of a particular route. For a traveler, the practical point is that airline fuel costs are one of the largest operating expenses, so fleet efficiency is part of how airlines decide which aircraft to keep flying.

A simpler fleet is easier to schedule and maintain
Executives tied fleet scale to better commercial deployment and operational efficiency. Fewer aircraft families mean fewer crew qualifications, parts inventories and maintenance procedures to manage. Delta’s stated move from 13 families toward seven is the context for this. Retiring an older type, including the 757, is one step in that consolidation, though Delta has not said how many 757s it intends to remove in any given year.
Parts from retired aircraft can support the rest of the fleet
Hauenstein also said Delta TechOps, the airline’s maintenance organization, could use material from retired aircraft to support the reliability of the existing fleet and lower costs over time. Taking usable components from aircraft being retired is a known way for operators to keep the remaining aircraft flying. Delta has described this as a benefit to the current fleet rather than as a reason to keep any particular 757 in service.

Replacement aircraft arrive over years, not months
In its full-year 2025 results, announced in January 2026, Delta reported an order for 30 Boeing 787-10s, with options for 30 more and deliveries scheduled to begin in 2031. CEO Ed Bastian said: “Delta is building the fleet for the future, enhancing the customer experience, driving operational improvements and providing steady replacements for less efficient, older aircraft in the decade to come.” That timeline explains why Delta can keep older aircraft flying while new ones are still years away. The release does not say that each 787 replaces a 757 one-for-one, and readers should not assume a direct swap.

- The current number of 757s in Delta’s fleet, or their age mix.
- A variant-specific retirement schedule for the 757-200 or 757-300.
- A route-level profitability comparison showing that a particular 757 earns more than alternatives. Delta has not published one, so the claim that a 757 is uniquely profitable on certain routes cannot be supported.
- Confirmation that any newer aircraft type is a direct replacement for the 757.
- The maintenance burden of the 757 compared with other types. Delta has discussed fleet-wide maintenance and parts, not this type’s costs.
How to track Delta’s 757 retirements yourself
- Check Delta’s aircraft overview page for the types listed. A type’s removal from that page is the clearest public sign that it is leaving the fleet.
- Read the fleet and fuel-efficiency sections of Delta’s annual Form 10-K each year. Retirement counts and fuel figures appear there with stated comparison bases.
- Follow Delta’s Investor Day materials and quarterly results releases for management commentary on retirements and deliveries.
- Before a flight, confirm the aircraft type in your booking or with Delta directly. Assignments can change, so a 757 on one schedule does not guarantee the same aircraft on another.
Delta’s position, as stated, is a steady transition. Older aircraft leave as new aircraft arrive and as the airline simplifies its fleet. The 757 is part of that transition, but Delta has not announced when it will be gone.
