Alaska Airlines sold all 12 of its Boeing 737-900 aircraft during 2025, completing the sales by December 31. The airline has not disclosed a specific reason for that transaction. Its broader plan to replace aging 737s and build a younger, more fuel-efficient fleet provides context, but Alaska has not said that this was the sale’s direct cause.
What Alaska did with its 737-900s
Alaska Air Group’s 2025 Form 10-K says the company agreed to sell 12 Boeing 737-900 aircraft to a third party and completed all 12 sales by December 31, 2025. The filing reports a $57 million gain associated with the sales. It does not name the buyer or say what happened to the aircraft afterward. Alaska Air Group’s 2025 Form 10-K
Why the sale happened—and what Alaska has not said
The clearest explanation available is the context of Alaska’s wider fleet strategy: the company says its aircraft orders include replacements for aging 737s and are intended to support a young, fuel-efficient fleet. That is consistent with moving on from older aircraft, but it is not a transaction-specific explanation for selling these 12 planes. Alaska’s 2026 fleet-order announcement
Alaska’s 2025 filing does not attribute the sale to a particular maintenance expense, reliability or safety concern, route change, or fuel-consumption calculation. It also does not connect the sale to the 2024 Flight 1282 incident. Those explanations should not be treated as established reasons for this transaction.

Three “900” aircraft names that are easy to confuse
| Aircraft | What Alaska did or lists | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Boeing 737-900 | Sold all 12 during 2025; the sales were complete by December 31. | This is the model named in the sale disclosure. |
| Boeing 737-900ER | Still listed on Alaska’s aircraft information page. Alaska describes it as an extended-range, more fuel-efficient aircraft with 178 seats. | It is a distinct variant; the 737-900 sale does not mean Alaska got rid of every aircraft with “900” in its name. Alaska’s 737-900ER aircraft information |
| Boeing 737-9 MAX | Temporarily grounded after Flight 1282 in January 2024, then returned to service after inspections under an FAA-approved process. | This was a separate model and event, not the 737-900 sale. Alaska’s Flight 1282 updates |
Because booking and schedule displays may shorten aircraft names, a “737-900” label can be ambiguous. Alaska’s own aircraft information specifically identifies the 737-900ER; the official sale disclosure refers to the 737-900.

The filing identifies only a third-party buyer. It does not establish whether the aircraft were resold, dismantled for parts, scrapped, or put into another kind of service.
