American Airlines is phasing out Flagship First, the separate first-class cabin, as it shifts to Flagship Suite seating on refreshed and newer aircraft. Its 2026 announcement sets purchase cutoffs: Flagship First stops being sold for 777-300ER flights beginning Nov. 19, 2026, and for transcontinental travel beginning March 28, 2027, as more A321XLR aircraft enter the fleet. The announcement does not give a reason such as weak demand or low profitability. The closest explanation on record is a 2024 comment about domestic lie-flat economics, which concerned a different decision.
What American has announced
The change is being made through aircraft, not a single date. American’s 2026 announcement about its first retrofitted 777-300ER says the cabin on that aircraft is built around Flagship Suite seats and more premium seating overall. The sale cutoffs are the parts travelers will notice first, so it helps to read them carefully.
777-300ER: sales end November 19, 2026
According to the announcement, Flagship First will no longer be available for purchase on 777-300ER flights beginning Nov. 19. That is a purchase cutoff. It tells you when new bookings for that aircraft stop including Flagship First; it does not by itself say that every existing reservation or every route changes on that date.
American describes the retrofitted 777-300ER cabin as having 144 premium seats: 70 Flagship Suite seats, 44 Premium Economy seats and 30 Main Cabin Extra seats. Those figures come from the airline’s own description of this configuration in 2026. The announcement does not say how many seats were sold in the former First cabin or how the cabin performed financially.

Transcontinental routes: sales end March 28, 2027
The second cutoff applies to transcontinental routes. American said Flagship First will no longer be available for purchase on transcontinental travel beginning March 28, 2027, as more A321XLR aircraft enter the fleet. The A321XLR introduction announcement describes its cabin as 20 Flagship Suite seats, 12 Premium Economy seats and 123 Main Cabin seats. American said the aircraft would initially operate on U.S. transcontinental routes, and that its Flagship Suite offers lie-flat seating and privacy doors.
Because the transcontinental date is tied to aircraft arriving, the route-by-route switch may not happen all at once. Treat March 28, 2027 as the point after which Flagship First is no longer sold for that travel, not as a guarantee that every transcontinental flight that day has the new cabin.

The 2022 premium-seat plan
The move fits a longer plan. In a 2022 product announcement, American said premium seating on its long-haul fleet was planned to grow by more than 45% by 2026, and that it was adding Premium Economy seats in response to customer demand. That is a target stated in 2022. It is not a verified measurement of the fleet as it stands in 2026.
What the announcement does not say
The 2026 announcement describes the new cabins and the sale cutoffs. It does not state that Flagship First was unpopular, unprofitable or underperforming, and it does not name a financial reason for the phaseout. Any article that presents one of those as the established cause is going beyond what American has said publicly in this announcement.

That leaves the question open in a specific way. American has explained the product direction, but not the internal economics behind retiring the separate cabin. Readers should treat claims about the motive as informed guesses unless the airline states them.
The closest explanation on record: domestic lie-flat economics
In June 2024, the travel site One Mile at a Time reproduced an email attributed to Brian Znotins, American’s SVP of Network Planning. In it, he explained why American had not prioritized a widebody on the Miami to Los Angeles route. He said the airline finds it hard to make money from lie-flat business seats on domestic routes. Because a lie-flat seat takes up roughly four times the space of a coach seat, the airline generally needs about four times the coach fare on those seats to justify a widebody. On long-haul flights it can get that, but on domestic routes it is “lucky to get 2x.”

This is useful context for why lie-flat seats on domestic routes are a hard business, but it has limits. The email was about how American allocates domestic widebody aircraft, not about Flagship First. It is also an executive’s general comparison as reported by a third party in 2024, not audited airline-wide data, and it does not describe the decision to sell Flagship First through a particular date.

U.S. airlines have been adding premium seats and investing in premium amenities. The AP reported that trend in 2026, quoting travel analyst Henry Harteveldt, who said travelers will pay for comfort, service and amenities when the price is right. That supports a general explanation of why airlines are reshaping premium cabins. It does not establish American’s specific reasons for retiring this cabin.

How the cabins differ
Comparing the old and new experience works best when you separate the cabin structure from the seat itself, the aircraft and the route. The table below lists only the figures American has published; where a detail is not in the announcements, it is marked as such.
| Item | Retrofitted 777-300ER (2026 announcement) | A321XLR (2025 introduction announcement) |
|---|---|---|
| Flagship Suite seats | 70 | 20 |
| Premium Economy seats | 44 | 12 |
| Main Cabin Extra seats | 30 | Not stated |
| Main Cabin seats | Not stated | 123 |
| Premium seats (as American counts them) | 144 | Not stated |
| Flagship First sales end | Nov. 19, 2026 | March 28, 2027 (transcontinental travel) |
| Lie-flat seating in Flagship Suite | Not stated in this announcement | Yes, with privacy doors, per American |
American’s own current product pages describe Flagship First as available only on specified aircraft and routes. Do not assume the product name alone determines the seat, lounge access or service on a given flight. Check the aircraft type and your itinerary.
Quoted statements
American’s Chief Commercial Officer, Nat Pieper, said in the 2026 announcement: “Our Flagship® aircraft represents the next evolution of premium travel at American.” That is a statement about product direction, not an explanation of Flagship First’s sales performance.
What to check before you book
- Open your reservation and confirm the aircraft type. A 777-300ER and an A321XLR carry different cabins.
- If you are booking travel after Nov. 19, 2026 on a 777-300ER, or after March 28, 2027 on a transcontinental route, check whether Flagship First is still offered for that flight in the booking tool.
- For existing reservations, read the fare rules and any change notices from American rather than relying on the cutoff date alone.
- Check whether the cabin you are paying for includes lie-flat seating, a privacy door and the Premium Economy or Main Cabin Extra features you expect.
The bottom line for travelers
American is retiring the separate Flagship First cabin in favor of Flagship Suite seating and a larger premium cabin on newer and retrofitted aircraft, with dated sale cutoffs for the 777-300ER and transcontinental travel. The airline has not said why in this announcement, and the 2024 domestic lie-flat comment is about a different decision. Verify the aircraft and route on your own itinerary before planning around a specific cabin.
