Vinod Adani is the older brother of Gautam Adani, who leads the Adani Group. He became a focus of the 2023 controversy after the short seller Hindenburg Research alleged that he and associates were connected to offshore entities and transactions involving Adani companies. The Adani Group denies that he has a managerial role in its listed companies. The courts and the market regulator have ruled on specific questions, but none of their decisions has tested every allegation made about him. The sections below separate what was alleged, what was answered, and what was decided.
Family relationship and limited public profile
Vinod Adani is Gautam Adani’s older brother. Public biographical detail about him is thin. The most detailed independent profile this article relies on is Scroll’s February 28, 2023 piece, “Who is Vinod Adani – the mysterious elder brother at the heart of the Adani crisis?” That profile describes a man who rarely appeared in public, which is why he drew attention once the controversy began. A low public profile is not evidence of wrongdoing.
Because that profile dates from 2023, its details about his age, residence, wealth and current position should not be treated as current. No current primary biographical source for him was verified for this article.
Why he came under scrutiny
Vinod Adani’s name entered the controversy through the report that Hindenburg Research published on January 24, 2023, titled “Adani Group: How The World’s 3rd Richest Man Is Pulling The Largest Con In Corporate History.” The report is available at hindenburgresearch.com/adani/. Hindenburg is a short seller, meaning it profits if the shares it targets fall, and its assertions should be read as its own allegations rather than established facts.

What Hindenburg alleged about him
- That Vinod Adani held executive roles in group companies earlier in the group’s history.
- That he and associates were linked to numerous offshore entities.
- That some transactions involving those entities and Adani companies were suspect.
Hindenburg’s report also made broader claims about the group’s listed companies, including stock-related activity and fund flows. Those broader claims are separate from the claims about Vinod Adani personally, and the court and SEBI proceedings discussed below do not resolve them in full.
The Adani Group’s response
The Adani Group responded in the days after the report, on January 29 and 30, 2023, according to Scroll’s account of the statement. The group’s position on Vinod Adani, as Scroll quotes it, is that he “does not hold any managerial position in any Adani listed entities or their subsidiaries and has no role in their day to day affairs.”
Rank #2
That statement is a denial of a managerial or day-to-day role in listed entities and subsidiaries. It does not, on the wording reported, address every offshore entity or transaction Hindenburg named. Readers should keep the two scopes apart.
What the Supreme Court decided
The Supreme Court of India ruled on petitions arising from the Hindenburg report in a judgment dated January 3, 2024, in Vishal Tiwari v. Union of India (2024 INSC 3). The full text is available as a PDF from the Andhra Pradesh High Court’s judgments collection. The judgment recorded allegations made by petitioners about overseas funds said to be associated with an Adani family member. Those were the petitioners’ allegations, not judicial findings.

- It found no apparent regulatory failure attributable to SEBI on the record before it. The judgment states: “There is no apparent regulatory failure attributable to SEBI.”
- It declined to transfer the investigation to another agency or to a special investigation team.
Those two points concern the regulator’s conduct and the investigation’s forum. They are not a ruling that each allegation about Vinod Adani is false, nor a finding that any of them is true.
SEBI’s Adicorp order: a narrow proceeding
The Securities and Exchange Board of India issued a final order in September 2025 in a matter titled “Hindenburg Allegations against Adani Group with respect to transactions with Adicorp Enterprises Private Limited.” The order is available at sebi.gov.in.
The order concerns that one set of transactions. It recounts Hindenburg’s claim that Adicorp was used as a conduit to route money to Adani Power. It also records the group’s position that Adicorp was not a related party and that the transactions complied with law. The order does not dispose of every allegation in the Hindenburg report, and it should not be cited as if it did. For the operative findings and penalties, readers should go to the order’s final section, not to summaries.

Allegations, answers and decisions compared
The four sources answer different questions. The table below keeps them apart.
| Source and date | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Hindenburg Research report, January 24, 2023 | Its own allegations that Vinod Adani held past executive roles and was linked to offshore entities and suspect transactions | Any finding by a court or regulator that these allegations are true |
| Adani Group statement, January 29–30, 2023 (as quoted by Scroll) | The group’s position that he holds no managerial position in listed entities or subsidiaries and no day-to-day role | A reported answer to each offshore entity or transaction named in the report |
| Supreme Court of India judgment, January 3, 2024 | No apparent regulatory failure attributable to SEBI on the record, and no transfer of the investigation | A ruling on the merits of each allegation, including those about Vinod Adani |
| SEBI final order, September 2025 (Adicorp matter) | The findings in that order about the Adicorp-related transactions | The disposition of the wider Hindenburg allegations or of any allegation about Vinod Adani outside that matter |
If a headline says Vinod Adani was “cleared” or “found guilty,” check which of these four sources it refers to and what question that source answered. In the material reviewed here, neither outcome is established for him as a whole.
