Online, it describes a single grocery cart that can combine Whole Foods items with Amazon groceries and everyday essentials. The changes point to a closer connection between the brands, though Amazon has not published a full schedule or count for the store conversions or its newer fulfillment concept.
Amazon is shifting its physical grocery-store strategy
In a January 27, 2026 update, Amazon said it would close its Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh physical stores and convert various locations to Whole Foods Market stores. The company said it had not yet created “a truly distinctive customer experience with the right economic model needed for large-scale expansion” of its Amazon-branded physical grocery stores. The announcement describes a change in how Amazon intends to use its physical grocery footprint: instead of expanding Amazon-branded stores at scale, it plans to bring some locations under the Whole Foods brand. It does not mean every Amazon Go or Amazon Fresh store will become a Whole Foods, nor does the cited announcement establish a complete conversion list or timetable.

Amazon has also described a micro-fulfillment concept at a Whole Foods Market in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania. The system, provided by Fulfil, is intended to stage Whole Foods and Amazon items for pickup or delivery. Amazon says it plans to refine and expand the concept over time, but the cited materials do not specify how many stores will use it or when expansion will occur.

Prime ties Whole Foods shopping to Amazon grocery benefits

Amazon also offers a grocery delivery subscription for Prime members covering qualifying orders from Whole Foods, Amazon Fresh and participating local grocers. Whether a subscription makes sense depends on the services available to you, how often you order and the applicable terms. In a May 12, 2026 update, Amazon said its perishable-grocery Same-Day Delivery service was available in more than 2,300 U.S. cities and towns. Amazon also reported that nine of its ten top-selling items in areas with perishable Same-Day Delivery were perishables, and that its U.S. grocery business generated over $150 billion in gross sales in 2025. These are company-reported figures about Amazon’s broader grocery operation; they are not Whole Foods-only sales or independent measures of the impact of linking the businesses. The clearest evidence of closer integration is therefore operational and customer-facing: Amazon says some physical locations will become Whole Foods stores, online carts can combine Whole Foods and Amazon items, and Prime benefits span parts of the grocery experience. The available company materials do not establish how the changes affect Whole Foods’ financial performance or provide a complete rollout plan.
