John McEvoy is a US investor and entrepreneur who was reported in October 2025 as one of the leading candidates to buy Sheffield Wednesday. He did not become the owner. On 2 May 2026 the English Football League (EFL) confirmed that Arise Capital Partners LLC, led by David Storch with Michael Storch and Tom Costin, had completed its agreement to acquire the club’s assets. The club is no longer in administration.
The “billionaire” label in the headline is not established by the reporting that names McEvoy. The sources describe his business interests in general terms and do not verify a net worth. The sections below separate what is confirmed, what was reported, and what remains unverified.

Who the reporting describes
Most of what is publicly known about McEvoy comes from two press reports, and both are attributed background rather than a full biography.
- BBC Sport, 11 October 2022: In a report on his consideration of a bid for Coventry City, BBC Sport described him as the founder of a San Diego-based mobile device distribution company. It also said he held stakes in the Nashville Predators and the Colorado Rockies. That report is more than four years old and does not establish the current size or terms of any of those holdings.
- Telegraph, 28 October 2025 (carried by Yahoo Sports): The Telegraph described his portfolio as including a minority stake in the talent-management firm Various Artists Management. The article linked that firm to the Sheffield band Reverend and the Makers and said the band’s lead singer, Jon McClure, had been consulted. These are the newspaper’s claims, not independently confirmed facts.
Neither source gives a figure for his personal wealth, a complete company history, or the value of his investments. Treat any article that presents him as a verified billionaire with caution.

What the October 2025 reporting actually said
The Telegraph reported on 28 October 2025 that McEvoy was among the leading candidates to buy Sheffield Wednesday and had been weighing a bid for months. The article relied on people familiar with the process, and it did not establish that he made a formal offer that was accepted.
That distinction matters. “Reported as a candidate” describes interest. “Completed the purchase” describes a legal transfer of the club’s assets. Only the second is confirmed, and the confirmed buyer is not McEvoy.
The process also changed over time. In January 2026, BBC Sport reported that James Bord, Felix Romer and Alsharif Faisal Bin Jamil were associated with a preferred-bidder consortium. That report shows the sale was contested and shifting, but it does not name the eventual owner.
Who completed the purchase
The EFL’s statement of 2 May 2026 is the primary source for the outcome. It confirmed that Arise Capital Partners LLC had completed an agreement with the administrators for the transfer of the club’s assets, and that Sheffield Wednesday was no longer in administration. The league’s statement names David Storch as leading the group, with Michael Storch and Tom Costin also named.

The same statement set out the league’s conditions for the club after its exit from administration:
- No 15-point deduction. The EFL said it would not impose a points deduction following the club’s exit from administration.
- Two-season budget restriction. The club will remain under a budget restriction for the next two seasons.
- Player registration tied to a business plan. Registrations will follow a business plan agreed with the EFL.
These are the conditions stated on 2 May 2026. Check the EFL’s own announcements for any later change before relying on them, since league conditions can be updated.

Several things a reader might assume are not supported by the available reporting:

The club’s own position
EFL Chief Executive Trevor Birch said in the league’s 2 May 2026 statement: “The recent period leading up to and following Administration has been an extremely testing time for the Club and all associated with Sheffield Wednesday, particularly the players, coaching staff, club employees and supporters.”
