Charlie Lee is the computer scientist who created Litecoin, a decentralized cryptocurrency he announced in 2011. He studied electrical engineering and computer science at MIT, worked at Google and Coinbase, and is listed as a director of the Litecoin Foundation. His exact net worth is not publicly established by the sources reviewed; figures circulated online should be treated as unverified estimates, not confirmed wealth.

Who is Charlie Lee?

Charles B. Lee, known as Charlie Lee, is a software engineer and the creator of Litecoin. The Litecoin Foundation lists him as a director, and a 2026 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission also describes him as Litecoin’s creator and a Foundation director. The filing additionally identifies him as a board appointee of Lite Strategy. The Foundation’s leadership page and the SEC filing document those roles.

Education and career

Lee attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and graduated in 2000 with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering and computer science, according to the 2026 SEC filing. He went on to work as a software engineer at Google and later became Director of Engineering at Coinbase. He left Coinbase in 2017 to focus full time on supporting Litecoin’s development, the filing says. SEC filing

What is Litecoin, and when did Lee create it?

Litecoin is a decentralized cryptocurrency that uses peer-to-peer technology. Its network’s participants collectively manage transaction processing; it is not a company controlled by Lee. The project’s official explainer says Lee announced Litecoin’s launch on October 9, 2011. Litecoin Core, often described as the most popular full-node client, is software used with the network—not a physical product. Litecoin’s official explainer

Did Charlie Lee sell his Litecoin?

Yes. In a December 20, 2017 report, TechCrunch said Lee had sold all of his LTC holdings, with the exception of some physical coins he kept as collectibles. Lee’s stated reason was to avoid the conflict of interest he saw in influencing Litecoin while personally holding the asset. A Wharton interview summary also says he sold his entire Litecoin stake that year. TechCrunch’s December 2017 report · Wharton interview summary

That account concerns the position Lee described in 2017; it does not establish his current holdings, whether in cryptocurrency or other assets, or his overall financial position.

What is Charlie Lee’s net worth?

There is no verified figure for Lee’s exact net worth in the cited sources. The 2026 SEC filing provides biographical and board information, not a personal balance sheet. Techopedia likewise says his exact net worth is undisclosed and characterizes discussion of alleged sale proceeds as speculation. Techopedia’s discussion

Online estimates—including precise dollar amounts—should not be presented as fact without a credible disclosure and a clear method. A claim about proceeds from selling Litecoin would not by itself establish net worth: proceeds are not the same as total assets minus liabilities, and the sources do not establish his cost basis, taxes, other assets, debts, later transactions, or subsequent income.
