Who You Can Add to Your Car Insurance—and Why It Matters

You can generally ask your insurer to list someone who lives in your household or regularly drives your car. Whether that person must be listed, can rely on a separate policy, or may be excluded depends on your policy, insurer, and state. Tell your insurer about household drivers and ask how your policy treats them before they drive.

Who should you tell your insurer about?

Residence and driving access matter more than a person’s relationship to you. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) says car insurers are entitled to know who lives in your household and who drives your vehicles. Its guidance recommends notifying the insurer when a new resident drives; a licensed household member without a car may need to be added, depending on the circumstances. NAIC guidance on household drivers.

  • Spouse or partner: Ask whether the policy requires a spouse or partner who lives with you or uses your car to be listed. Marital status alone does not settle how coverage works.
  • Teen or newly licensed child: Requirements vary. California consumer guidance says a standard policy may cover occasional household driving, but an insurer may require a household member of legal driving age to be permanently added for a premium. The guide also describes exclusion as a possible option if separate proof of insurance is provided. This is a California example, not a nationwide rule. California auto insurance guide.
  • Adult child or other relative moving in: Tell the insurer if the new resident drives your car. If the resident owns a vehicle and has a separate policy, the insurer may ask to see it; a licensed resident without a vehicle may be someone to add.
  • Roommate or other non-relative: Ask how to report the person if they live with you, drive the insured car, or have regular access to it. Do not assume that being unrelated means they can be left off the policy.
  • Friend or visitor: Occasional borrowing may be covered under some policies, but permission by itself does not guarantee coverage. Check your policy or ask the insurer about permissive drivers and exclusions. Maryland Insurance Administration guidance.

Does car insurance cover someone who borrows your car?

Sometimes, but the answer depends on the policy wording and state rules. Occasional use by a visitor may be treated differently from regular use by someone in your household. California guidance cautions consumers to review exclusions before allowing another person to drive; Maryland advises checking the policy or contacting the insurer about permissive drivers. Neither occasional permission nor a person’s relationship to you is enough to establish coverage on its own.

Before lending the car, ask the insurer whether the proposed driver is covered, which coverages apply, and whether any exclusion changes the answer. Review the relevant policy language rather than relying solely on a general explanation.

Why does the insurer ask who drives?

The insurer uses household and driver information to evaluate the policy. A driver’s age and driving history can affect the premium, though the amount and direction of any change depend on the particular drivers and policy. Adding someone does not automatically mean the price will rise by a predictable amount.

Leaving out a licensed household driver can also create problems. NAIC warns that misrepresenting licensed household members may lead to a future claim being denied or a policy being canceled or not renewed. These are potential consequences, not automatic outcomes in every case. NAIC guidance.

Should the person be listed, insured separately, or excluded?

Ask the insurer to explain which of these applies to your situation. The right treatment depends on household status, how often the person drives, any separate insurance, and the policy’s terms.

  • Listed on your policy: Ask whether the insurer requires this and what the premium change would be.
  • Documented as separately insured: If the person owns a car and has a separate policy, ask whether the insurer needs proof and how that policy affects your own.
  • Excluded: Ask exactly what the exclusion means if that person drives your car. Do not assume an exclusion is harmless or that the person will be covered by another policy.

An endorsement can change the contract by adding, modifying, or excluding coverage, and it may affect the premium. Keep a copy of any endorsement and read the change. NAIC guidance on understanding policy endorsements.

What to do when someone moves in or starts driving

  1. Contact your insurer or agent when someone moves into your household, gets licensed, or begins driving your car regularly.
  2. Describe the situation accurately: Say whether the person lives with you, owns a vehicle, has a separate policy, and how often they use your car.
  3. Ask how the policy should treat the person: Find out whether they must be listed, can be documented as separately insured, or can be excluded. If exclusion is an option, ask what happens if that person drives.
  4. Request the premium impact and written documentation: Review the revised declarations page or endorsement, including the coverage and exclusion language. A verbal summary is not a substitute for reading the contract change.
  5. Escalate questions you cannot resolve: Contact your state insurance department. California’s consumer guide also advises reading the policy and asking the insurer or agent about questions. If you are shopping for coverage, compare quotes. California auto insurance guide.

What to compare in the insurer’s answer

When you discuss options, compare the treatment of the driver, not just the quoted premium. Make sure the insurer addresses whether the person is listed, treated as separately insured, or excluded; whether their use is occasional or regular; how household residence affects the answer; the premium change; and which coverages apply if they drive.

This is general U.S. consumer guidance, not a state-by-state legal survey or a reading of your individual policy. State law, insurer rules, policy definitions, and permissive-use provisions vary. For a decision about a particular driver, get an answer from your insurer and check your state insurance department’s guidance.
