No single list reliably ranks who owns the most bitcoin, because no source combines individuals, pseudonymous early miners, companies, funds, exchanges and governments on the same basis. The largest individual-style attribution is an early-mining cluster associated with Satoshi Nakamoto, estimated at about 968,000 BTC. The largest named corporate holder in the disclosures reviewed for this article is Strategy Inc., which reported approximately 843,775 BTC as of July 24, 2026. Both figures come with important limits, explained below.
The short answer, by category
The table below lists the figures that carry the most weight in public discussion. Each row uses its own source, category and date, so the numbers are not directly comparable.
| Holder | Category | Reported figure | Position date | Source | What the figure does not show |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Satoshi/Patoshi early-mining cluster | Pseudonymous early-miner attribution | About 968,000 BTC (estimate) | Based on analysis of 2009 mining activity; reported in 2025 | BitMEX Research analysis, as reproduced by River | Not a confirmed balance. Does not establish a real-world identity or prove one legal owner for every address in the cluster. |
| Strategy Inc. | Public company treasury | Approximately 843,775 BTC | July 24, 2026 | Strategy’s Form 10-Q for the second quarter of 2026 | Not a live balance. Shareholders do not own specific bitcoins on the balance sheet. Whether any of the coins are encumbered is not stated in the source consulted. |
| MARA Holdings, Inc. | Public bitcoin miner treasury | 53,822 BTC total, including 15,315 BTC loaned or pledged | December 31, 2025 | MARA’s 2025 Form 10-K | The total includes coins that are loaned or pledged. Arithmetically, 38,507 BTC of the total were not reported as loaned or pledged. |
| Exchanges and custodians | Custody on behalf of clients | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated in the sources consulted | Controlling keys to a wallet is not the same as beneficial ownership of the coins inside it. |
Why there is no single ranking
A ranking that places a pseudonymous mining cluster beside a public company requires mixing three kinds of evidence: a mathematical attribution from blockchain patterns, a corporate filing with a legal definition of holdings, and a live tracker that aggregates both. Each has different reliability. A ranking that merges them presents a precision the underlying data does not have.
Governments and funds are harder still. The sources reviewed did not establish a complete, synchronized count for either category, so this article does not place them in the table.

Individuals and pseudonymous early miners
The Satoshi/Patoshi estimate is the most cited individual-level figure. It attributes roughly 968,000 BTC to a cluster of addresses associated with early mining in 2009. The attribution rests on how those coins were mined, not on a signed statement or an identity check. The estimate is reported as the work of BitMEX Research, and River reproduced it in 2025. Treat the figure as an estimate of coins associated with a pattern, not as proof that one person holds that balance today.
Public companies
Strategy is the largest named corporate holder in the disclosures reviewed. Its Form 10-Q reports approximately 843,775 BTC as of July 24, 2026. A 10-Q is a dated, legally filed statement, which makes it stronger evidence than a tracker entry, but it is still a snapshot. The balance may have changed since that date.

MARA’s 2025 Form 10-K shows why a total needs a definition. Its 53,822 BTC figure at December 31, 2025 includes 15,315 BTC that were loaned or pledged. A reader who treats the whole number as freely available would overstate what the company could sell.
Secondary trackers
CoinGecko’s live treasury tracker listed Strategy first among tracked institutions when viewed on October 8, 2026. Trackers are useful for a quick overview, but they combine disclosures with different dates and levels of evidence. Use them to find filings, not as a replacement for them.

Wallet control is not ownership
A large address balance on a blockchain explorer does not show who owns the coins. Exchanges and custodians often hold keys on behalf of clients. In that arrangement the platform controls the wallet, but the client may be the beneficial owner of the coins. The sources reviewed do not establish a complete exchange-custody census, so no exchange-level ranking is offered here.
Shareholders are a similar case. Owning Strategy stock does not give a person title to specific bitcoins on the company’s balance sheet. The company reports its own holdings and its own custody arrangements.

How to read any bitcoin ownership number
- Category: Is the holder a person or pseudonym, a public company, a fund, an exchange, or a government?
- Evidence type: Is the figure from a filing, from a published analysis of blockchain patterns, or from a live tracker?
- Position date: When was the balance measured? Bitcoin balances change, so an undated number is incomplete.
- Control and encumbrance: Are the coins unencumbered, loaned, pledged, or held for clients?
- Definition: Does “held” mean legal title, custody, or total holdings including encumbered coins?
How to check a company’s figure yourself
- Go to the SEC’s EDGAR database and search for the company by name or ticker.
- Open the most recent Form 10-Q (quarterly) or Form 10-K (annual) filing.
- Search the document for “bitcoin” and find the holdings table or the note on digital assets.
- Record the number, the “as of” date, and any wording about loaned, pledged or restricted coins.
- Compare that date with a tracker’s figure before quoting either one.
If a filing has been amended or a newer quarter has been published, the newer document supersedes the older figure. Always state the category and date when you cite a number.
