The best place to exchange money in Canada depends on the amount, the currency, and how soon you need cash. Banks and other financial institutions usually offer the most reliable cash rates if you can order ahead. Airport and hotel desks are the fallback when you need cash immediately. A foreign debit or credit card at an ATM is the simplest option after you arrive, but its total cost depends on your card issuer and the ATM operator. No single location is always cheapest, so compare the final amount you would receive for the same Canadian-dollar figure at each provider.
Your four main routes
Visitors and newcomers generally have four ways to get Canadian dollars or to pay in Canada. Each one trades off convenience, timing, and cost differently.
| Option | Best suited to | What to compare before you use it |
|---|---|---|
| Bank or financial institution order | Travellers who can plan a few days ahead and want cash before departure | Exact cash rate, any fee or delivery charge, currency availability, pickup timing |
| Airport or hotel exchange desk | Anyone who needs cash immediately on arrival or has no other option | Final amount received, the rate, separate fees, opening hours |
| Foreign debit or credit card at an ATM | Visitors with a usable card who want cash after arriving | Your issuer’s foreign-transaction charges, the ATM operator’s charge, withdrawal limits, and whether you are offered a conversion choice |
| Digital currency conversion or card service | People who can transact digitally or spend from a multi-currency account or card | Live fee for your specific currency pair, card availability, ATM limits and charges, transfer timing |
The Government of Canada does not publish a city-by-city comparison, a universal cheapest provider, or a complete fee schedule across these options. The table is a checklist of what to verify, not a ranking.
Ordering cash from a bank before you leave
Government of Canada travel guidance says foreign cash can be ordered through a financial institution before departure, sometimes online or by phone, with delivery to a local branch for pickup. The same guidance says bank exchange rates are slightly better than elsewhere. Treat that as a general pattern rather than a guarantee: it does not establish that every bank, currency, or transaction will beat every alternative.

This route suits you if you are travelling with a known amount and can wait for delivery or pickup. It is less useful if your flight lands late and you need cash the same night, or if your bank does not stock the currency you need.
Airport and hotel exchange desks
Government of Canada newcomer guidance states that most airports have foreign-exchange offices, and that you can exchange money after you arrive. Hotel desks offer a similar service. These are practical when cash is urgent, but the official travel guidance does not provide a current fee or rate comparison for them, so you should check the amount you will actually receive before handing over currency.

Pay attention to two things at the counter: the quoted rate itself, and whether a separate commission or service charge is added on top. A desk that advertises no fee may still build its margin into the rate.
Using a foreign debit or credit card at an ATM
Foreign debit or credit cards can be used to withdraw cash from automated banking machines in Canada. Two separate charges may apply: your card issuer may add a foreign-transaction fee, and the ATM operator may add its own withdrawal charge. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada publishes an ATM fee page, but it was last modified in August 2022 and describes historical collected ranges. Do not treat those ranges as the charges you will pay today. Instead, check the ATM screen before you confirm a withdrawal and your card issuer’s current terms before you travel.

If the ATM offers to convert the withdrawal into Canadian dollars at its own rate, decline and let your card network or issuer do the conversion. The ATM’s rate is often less favourable.
Digital currency conversion and card services
Digital providers such as Wise Canada offer currency conversion and card services. Wise’s Canada pricing page says its conversion fees vary by currency and shows a starting fee. That starting fee is not the price for every currency pair, so check the live fee for the exact pair and amount you need. Digital services are a sensible option if you already hold a balance or card with the provider and plan to spend rather than carry physical cash. They are not automatically the cheapest choice for every traveller.

Use the Bank of Canada rate as a reference point, not a quote
The Bank of Canada publishes indicative daily exchange rates. It calculates them from averages of aggregated price quotes from financial institutions and publishes them once each business day by 16:30 Eastern Time. Its own wording is that these rates are indicative only. They are not the rate a bank, desk, or app will give you.
Use the Bank of Canada converter to estimate what a fair rate looks like. Then compare that benchmark with actual provider quotes and add any separate fees. The Bank also notes a change in May 2026 to the currencies for which it publishes rates, so confirm that your currency is still listed before you rely on the benchmark.
Best Value
- Effectively blocks RFID readers from capturing information protecting your identity and valuables
- Two zippered pockets to store and protect money, passport and credit/debit cards
- Three drop pockets hold tickets, receipts and boarding passes
- Comfortable to wear over or under clothing when the back air mesh panel helps to keep you cool and an adjustable waist strap fits most waist sizes.
- Size 10.75"W x 5"H x 0.125"D, Weight 0.38 Lbs, material Polyester
How to compare a quote before you exchange
- Choose the amount you need in Canadian dollars, for example 500 CAD, and the currency you will be paying or receiving.
- Ask each provider how much foreign currency you will receive for that same Canadian-dollar amount, not just the advertised rate.
- Ask whether a delivery, transaction, or service charge applies on top of the rate.
- Ask whether the quoted rate is guaranteed for your transaction or may change before it completes.
- Compare the final figures against the Bank of Canada indicative rate for the same day.
- For ATMs and cards, check the foreign-transaction charge with your issuer and the operator’s withdrawal charge on the screen before you confirm.
What is not established
- No current, city-specific rate comparison for Canadian exchange providers is available from the official sources.
- No single provider type is shown to be cheapest across all amounts, currencies, and times.
- The most detailed ATM fee ranges found are historical, from a page last updated in August 2022.
- Physical banknote exchange and digital account conversion carry different fee structures, so a fee comparison in one does not transfer to the other.
For live terms, check the provider’s own published fees and your card issuer’s current schedule at the time you travel.
