Check the refund in Xbox order history while signed in to the Microsoft account that made the purchase. If it shows that Microsoft has issued the refund but the money has not reached your account, Microsoft’s guidance is to allow a few days for your payment provider or bank to post the credit. Microsoft’s general processing estimate for refunds is 3–5 business days, and refunds are applied to the original payment option, which is not necessarily your Xbox balance.
Check the refund status in Xbox order history
Microsoft directs customers to Xbox order history for digital game and app purchases. The steps below follow that route; the exact menu labels can change as Microsoft updates its Xbox and account pages, so match the wording on your screen to the sequence.

- Sign in at xbox.com with the Microsoft account used at checkout.
- Open order history from your account menu.
- Find the purchase and open it to read its refund status.
- Note the exact status label and the date the refund was issued, if shown. You will need these details if you contact support.
Confirm you are using the right Microsoft account
Most “missing refund” cases start with the wrong account. Microsoft specifically advises customers who hold more than one Microsoft account to confirm they are signed in to the one used for the purchase. Check these points before assuming the refund is lost:
- Family members or work and personal accounts can each hold separate purchase histories.
- A purchase made on one console, PC, or mobile device may still be tied to the account you used at checkout, not the account currently signed in on that device.
- If the purchase is absent from the account you expect, switch accounts before contacting support.
Read the status label correctly
Refund labels describe a step in a process, not the moment your bank balance changes. The two labels Microsoft’s guidance addresses directly are listed below.

A request being submitted is not the same as a refund being approved or issued. Microsoft’s guidance treats request processing and payment-provider processing as separate stages, so a status change inside Xbox does not guarantee that the bank has posted anything.
Understand the two timing figures
Microsoft’s public support guidance gives two numbers that are often confused. Both come from Microsoft Support’s refund page for apps and games purchased from Microsoft Store. That page does not display a publication year; the figures were checked in 2026.

Because the two periods can overlap, a refund that is still waiting at a bank after a few days may be normal even when Xbox already shows it as issued. Track the posting date from the moment the status changed, not from the day you requested the refund.
Find out where the money goes
Microsoft’s guidance says refunds go back to the original payment option. For a card, that means the card account; for a bank or wallet payment, it means that payment method. The refund does not automatically become Xbox account credit or a balance you can spend in the Microsoft Store. If you paid with a method that has since expired, closed, or changed, the refund may need to be checked with the payment provider or Microsoft Support before it can be credited.

When to contact Microsoft Support
Contact support only after you have checked the account, the status, and the posting window. Have these details ready:
- The order or purchase name and date, as shown in Xbox order history
- The Microsoft account email used for the purchase
- The refund status label and the date it changed, if visible
- The payment method used and the statement line or reference you are checking for
Public support pages cannot show the status of an individual customer’s refund, so Microsoft will need the order details to look up the case.

Subscriptions and hardware follow different rules
Xbox subscriptions
Not all Microsoft subscriptions are refundable. Eligibility is a separate question from the refund status of a game or app. If a subscription refund is eligible, Microsoft says its status can be checked in Microsoft account order history. Check eligibility before expecting a refund to appear.
Hardware returns
The guidance covering digital games and apps does not establish how hardware returns are tracked or how long they take to post. Hardware refunds may follow different status or eligibility guidance, so check the return or refund instructions that came with your order or the Microsoft Support page for your specific product.

What public guidance cannot tell you
Microsoft’s public pages explain where to look and how long posting usually takes, but they cannot confirm the status, eligibility, payment destination, or arrival date for your individual order. Those details depend on your account and order record and, for the final posting, on your payment provider.
