In 2022, Tyler Shultz was publicly active as the Theranos whistleblower. He appeared on CBS in January reacting to the verdict in Elizabeth Holmes’s trial, and in September a Louisville business publication listed him as a speaker on his time at Theranos. The public record shows those appearances. It does not establish where he lived in 2022 or give a month-by-month account of his work that year.

What the public record shows for 2022

January 4, 2022: CBS Mornings

CBS lists a “CBS Mornings” segment dated January 4, 2022, in which Shultz reacted to the verdict in Holmes’s case. CBS’s description says he had reported his concerns about Theranos to state regulators. The listing summarizes his reaction rather than transcribing his remarks, so the exact wording of what he said on air is not available from that source. CBS listing, January 4, 2022

September 22, 2022: Louisville Startup Week

A Louisville Business First report dated September 22, 2022 describes Shultz as a speaker at Louisville Startup Week, discussing his time at Theranos and his whistleblowing. The summary is the part we could confirm; details beyond it are not established here. Louisville Business First, September 22, 2022

Two dated appearances are a thin basis for describing a whole year. Treat them as proof that he was publicly speaking about Theranos in 2022, not as a map of where he was or what job he held.

What he did at Theranos

The clearest institutional account comes from a teaching note by the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University. It is a case study for classroom discussion, not a court finding, but it lays out the sequence that explains why the press called Shultz a whistleblower:

  • He was a recent college graduate in 2014 when he joined Theranos as a research engineer on the assay validation team, which checked tests run on the company’s Edison machine.
  • He saw what he considered significant quality-control failures and first raised them internally.
  • The case describes hostility toward those concerns.
  • He resigned after about eight months.
  • Wall Street Journal reporter John Carreyrou then contacted him, as the case describes.

His grandfather, George Shultz, sat on the Theranos board. The case treats that family tie as a complicating personal dimension rather than a separate story. Santa Clara University, Markkula Center teaching note

Why he is called a whistleblower

The label rests on two things: his internal objections to the testing practices he had seen, and his later decision to take concerns to state regulators, as CBS’s description reports. The most direct statement of his position comes from his own official speaker page, which presents this sentence as coming from his message to Elizabeth Holmes when he left the company:

“I’m dedicated to the long term vision of the company, but I’m worried that some of our current practices will prevent us from reaching our long term goals.”

The page attributes the sentence to Shultz but does not reproduce the original letter, so the quote should be read as his own later presentation of that message rather than as a document you can inspect. Tyler Shultz official speaker page

What he has done since, with dates

Later biographical material describes a different phase of his career, and it should not be read back into 2022:

  • Official speaker page (undated): describes him as a co-founder of two diagnostics startups, a startup adviser, and an advocate for whistleblowers. Official speaker page
  • Boise State event page (2026): describes his later diagnostics and advising work in an ethics-events biography. Boise State ethics events

Neither source ties these roles to a specific start or end date, so they do not tell you which of them, if any, he held during 2022.

If you want the wider story, Santa Clara University’s teaching note lists John Carreyrou’s Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup as background reading. The same page also references Shultz’s own account, the 2020 audiobook Thicker than Water; check current retail availability and format before buying, since that listing was not verified here.
