Where to Find the 25-Character Code on a Gift Card

If you mean a Microsoft card or a Microsoft 365 or Office product key, look inside the physical card or box first. Microsoft’s support guidance says the code may be hidden under silver foil that you scratch off. If you bought the code online and never received a physical item, check the purchase email. Microsoft describes the code as 25 characters, not 25 digits, because it mixes letters and numbers. Other gift-card brands do not necessarily use this format or place the code in the same spot.

Why the code is 25 characters, not 25 digits

Microsoft’s support pages call the code a 25-character product key. The instructions say it contains “letters and numbers,” so a code that is only numeric may not be the one you need. When you search for help, use the term “25-character” to match Microsoft’s own wording, and check that the code you see has both letters and numbers.

Physical card or product-key box

Microsoft’s guidance for a physical purchase is direct. In the article “How to renew your Microsoft 365 subscription,” Microsoft Support says:

“If you have a physical box or card, look inside for your 25-character product key.”

The key “might be concealed with silver foil, which you scratch off to reveal the letters and numbers.”

Open the box or card that came with your purchase and look inside it for a printed panel.
If you see a silver-foil area, gently scratch it with a coin or fingernail to reveal the characters.
Copy all 25 characters exactly, including any letters that look similar to numbers, before you start redeeming.

Digital purchase or missing physical card

If you bought the code online, or no box or card arrived, Microsoft’s support says to check the purchase email. Microsoft’s guidance on adding money to a Microsoft account, in the article “Add money to your Microsoft account,” also describes receiving a gift code by email. Search your inbox for the Microsoft order confirmation and any message containing the code. If you cannot find it, check your spam or junk folder before assuming the code is missing.

Where you redeem the code

Microsoft uses two different redemption paths, and the code type determines which one applies.

Microsoft or Xbox gift card or code: Sign in to your Microsoft account, then enter or paste the code in Microsoft’s redemption flow. The Microsoft support article “Redeem a gift card or code to your Microsoft account” covers this process.
Microsoft 365 or Office product key: Microsoft directs you to Office.com/setup to activate it.

Before you redeem an emailed gift code, confirm that the Microsoft account you are signed in to is the one you intend to fund. Redeeming to the wrong account is the most common reason a code appears to “not work” when it is in fact valid.

Gift cards from other brands

The guidance above applies to Microsoft products. If your card comes from a retailer or another company, Microsoft’s instructions do not tell you where its code is printed or how many characters it has. Look for instructions printed on the card itself, then check the issuer’s official support page. Do not assume that a code from one brand follows the same format or placement as another.
