When is Black Friday in 2026?
Black Friday is Friday, November 27, 2026, in the United States. It follows Thanksgiving, which is Thursday, November 26, that year. The date changes annually because Thanksgiving is observed on the fourth Thursday of November. Timeanddate’s 2026 Thanksgiving calendar confirms the holiday date.
Why is it called Black Friday?
The origin of “Black Friday” as the name for the day after Thanksgiving is not settled. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says the origin is unclear and that the name likely reflected the day’s unusual position as the start of the busy holiday shopping season retailers hoped for. The agency’s analysis of Black Friday shopping distinguishes the familiar explanations from what can be established.
A commonly repeated account links the term to crowds and traffic in Philadelphia. Another popular explanation says retailers used the day to move from losses “in the red” to profits “in the black.” That retail explanation should not be treated as a proven origin. “Black Friday” has also been used for events unrelated to shopping, so the post-Thanksgiving retail meaning is only one use of the phrase.
What is the fuss about?
Black Friday became a prominent marker of the holiday shopping season, but modern promotions often extend well beyond Friday. The National Retail Federation (NRF) measures shopping across the five days from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday and separates in-store from online activity.
In NRF and Prosper Insights & Analytics’ 2025 survey release about the 2024 U.S. holiday weekend, an estimated 202.9 million consumers shopped during that five-day period. The survey estimated that 80.3 million shopped in stores on Black Friday and 85.7 million shopped online that day. These are survey estimates for the stated year, not a census or a forecast for 2026. Black Friday remained the leading shopping day in that five-day period for both in-store and online participation. For comparison, NRF and Prosper estimated that 197 million consumers shopped over the Thanksgiving-to-Cyber-Monday period in 2023. The figures show how many people participated; they do not establish that a product was discounted more deeply or offered at its lowest price. NRF’s 2023 weekend release gives the earlier estimate.
Is Black Friday only an American event?
The date is tied to the U.S. Thanksgiving calendar, but Black Friday also matters in other retail markets. That does not mean every country observes it on the same basis or follows the same sales customs. The U.K. Office for National Statistics discusses Black Friday when interpreting Great Britain’s November retail sales, illustrating its relevance to local retail data rather than establishing a universal observance. Are Black Friday deals actually worth it?
Popularity and advertised discounts are not enough to tell whether a specific offer is good value. The available shopper counts measure participation, not the price history of an individual product. To assess a deal, compare the item’s current price with its recent prices and check the total cost, including delivery, as well as the retailer’s return policy and terms. Without product-specific price evidence, there is no basis for saying a particular 2026 offer is the lowest price or a genuine bargain.
